Agathonisi doesn't feel like a place you visit so much as a place you stumble on — a speck of rock and scrub in the far eastern Aegean, closer to Turkey than to Athens, where the harbour at Agios Georgios still runs on fishing boats rather than ferries. Rent a scooter here and you can be swimming off Gaidourolakkos Beach within twenty minutes, its turquoise water framed by boulders at the end of a dusty track no bus will ever take you down. By afternoon you could be parked outside a taverna in Megalo Chorio, looking at whitewashed houses tucked behind walls once built to keep pirates out.
There's a simple reason a scooter suits this island so well: at roughly 13 km², Agathonisi is small enough to circle in a single day, but its one coast road switches between patchy asphalt and unpaved track almost block by block. There's no bus, no taxi rank, and no car-hire counter waiting at the port. A scooter is really the only vehicle built for a place this size and this rough — light enough for the gravel, quick enough that every beach and hamlet on the island is within reach before lunch.
For a moped up to 50cc you'll need at least a category AM licence and to be 16 or over; anything from 125cc up calls for the matching motorcycle category (A1, A2 or A), and a plain car licence won't cover you here. Non-EU visitors should carry an International Driving Permit alongside their licence. Rental shops will typically hold a deposit, either as a card pre-authorisation or in cash, with the amount set by the operator rather than fixed by law — and many shops set their own minimum age above the legal one, so it's worth checking when you book.
Expect to pay around 5-10 EUR per day in low season, rising to roughly 12-18 EUR per day in high season, with premium models running 18-25 EUR per day.
July and August are the island's high season — warm, busy, and priced accordingly, so book ahead if you're travelling then. November through March counts as low season, though many small island rental shops shut down entirely over these months. If you can, aim for May, June, September or October: the sea is still swimmable, the roads are quieter, and daily rates sit well below the summer peak.
Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger on any scooter, and police enforcement is strict, with real fines behind it. Speed limits top out at 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on the open road, though on an island this size you'll rarely need either. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, dropping to a stricter 0.2 g/l for motorcyclists, so it's simplest to treat riding and drinking as mutually exclusive. Keep in mind that rental insurance almost never covers unpaved roads or off-road riding — and on Agathonisi, where several of the best beaches sit at the end of a dirt track, that's worth bearing in mind before you leave the tarmac.
