Leros doesn't announce itself the way its bigger Dodecanese neighbours do, and that's exactly the point. Wind along the coastal road from Agia Marina toward Alinda Beach and you'll pass the harbour's old windmills before the road opens onto one of the island's longest stretches of sand, tavernas and all. Climb the other direction and the lane twists up to Panteli Castle, its Byzantine walls looking down over Panteli bay and the wider Aegean — the kind of view that's barely a five-minute ride away, but feels like a different world.

Leros is small, only about 20 km end to end, and its road network is short, hilly and tightly wound around the coast. Villages, beaches and the castle sit five to ten minutes apart by scooter, which makes a rental far more useful here than a car: parking is tight in Platanos and Agia Marina, and the narrow lanes reward two wheels. If you want to reach quieter spots like Gournas or Xerokambos beach, a scooter is really the only sensible way to get there without a long walk. Whether you're after a quick **scooter rental in Leros** for an afternoon or the whole week, it's the way locals actually get around.

Top 10 things to see in Leros by scooter

  1. Panteli Castle (Kastro tis Panagias) — a hilltop fortress above Platanos with sweeping views over Panteli bay, reached by a short, winding uphill ride.
  2. Alinda Beach — the island's longest and most popular sandy beach, lined with tavernas and the War Museum, an easy flat ride from Agia Marina.
  3. Vromolithos Beach — a well-organized pebble-and-sand beach south of Platanos, great for swimming and sunset views toward Kalymnos.
  4. Agia Marina Windmills & Harbor — traditional windmills overlooking the main port, a classic photo stop on the coastal ride toward Alinda.
  5. Lakki Town — the island's main port, built by the Italians in the 1930s as a model Art Deco city, well worth riding through.
  6. War Museum in Merikia (Bellini Bunker) — a WWII-era underground tunnel near Lakki, a short ride for anyone curious about the Battle of Leros.
  7. Gournas Beach — a quiet sandy beach near Partheni at the island's northern tip, a good stop for a longer ride.
  8. Xerokambos Beach — a secluded pebble beach on the southeastern coast, reached via a scenic minor road away from the villages.
  9. Platanos village and Leros Archaeological Museum — the hilltop capital between Agia Marina and Panteli, with narrow lanes and the road up to the castle.
  10. Coastal loop road Agia Marina – Alinda – Krithoni – Panteli – Vromolithos — a compact circuit linking most of the island's beaches and viewpoints, perfect for a full day out.

What do you need to rent a scooter in Leros?

For a 50cc moped you'll need at least an AM licence category; anything 125cc and up requires a matching motorcycle licence (A1, A2 or A) — a car licence alone won't cover you. The minimum age is 16 for AM mopeds and 18 for the motorcycle categories, though rental companies often set their own higher minimum. Non-EU visitors should bring an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence. Expect a deposit, usually held on a credit card, with the amount depending on the vehicle and operator.

How much does it cost to rent a scooter in Leros?

A basic 50cc scooter runs around 15-20 EUR per day in low season and 25-35 EUR during high season, with bigger scooters, ATVs and e-bikes typically priced at 30-45 EUR per day.

  • July and August are the most expensive months, and scooters can sell out.
  • Shoulder months like May, June, September and October sit between the low and high figures.
  • Many island rental shops close entirely from November through March.

When to book a rental scooter in Leros?

High season runs July to August, when prices peak and availability tightens, so booking a couple of weeks ahead is wise. Low season is effectively November to March, though many shops shut for winter entirely, making April-May and October the more realistic low-price window. May-June and September-October are the sweet spot: warm days, thinner crowds and easier riding conditions than the midsummer heat.

Local traffic rules in Leros

Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for riders and passengers on any moped, scooter or motorcycle, and this is enforced with real fines. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on the open road, though Leros's narrow, winding lanes rarely make those speeds relevant. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, but a stricter 0.2 g/l applies to motorcyclists. Keep in mind that rental insurance almost never covers unpaved roads or beach tracks, so stick to tarmac. Carry your licence, IDP and rental papers with you whenever you ride.
