Tripoli doesn't announce itself the way the coast towns do, and that's exactly the appeal. This is the Peloponnese's quiet inland capital, a plateau town ringed by the pine slopes of Mount Mainalo, and a bicycle lets you slip out of the modern grid and into the past within minutes — past the Temple of Athena Alea at Ancient Tegea, or across the flat approach to the circuit walls and theatre of Ancient Mantineia. It's a slower kind of travel, but it shows you more.
The city itself sits on flat ground, so a short ride covers the center, the shaded paths of Alsos Tripolis, and the nearby ruins without breaking a sweat. But Tripoli's real advantage is what's just beyond it: the town sits right at the foot of Mainalo, so if you're up for a climb, you can pedal from the plateau into forest villages like Levidi, Vytina and Alonistaina, trading city streets for mountain air in the space of an afternoon. Few provincial capitals in Greece give you both a walkable old center and a proper mountain on the doorstep.
None of this requires a licence — bicycles are open to anyone, with no minimum age or IDP needed. Some rental shops ask for a small deposit, usually held on a card, but requirements are far lighter than for a scooter or motorbike. Just bring some form of ID and you're set to start exploring.
Expect to pay around 3–5 EUR per day for a standard city or hybrid bike in low season, rising to roughly 7–10 EUR per day in high season. If you want an e-bike or a mountain bike built for the Mainalo trails, budget closer to 10–15 EUR per day.
High season runs July and August, when prices peak and the midday heat can make climbing toward Mainalo hard going. Low season stretches from November to February, with the lowest prices but cooler, shorter days. For the best balance, aim for spring or early autumn, when temperatures suit a longer ride up to Vytina or Alonistaina without the summer crowds.
Greece drives on the right, and that applies to cyclists too. There's no legal helmet requirement for cyclists, though wearing one is always a sensible idea on the descents around Mainalo. Speed limits in built-up areas top out at 50 km/h, so drivers are used to sharing narrower streets with bikes, but stay alert on the open roads leading out of town, where traffic moves faster. If you're combining a bike ride with a car or scooter elsewhere on your trip, remember Greece enforces a stricter 0.2 g/l blood-alcohol limit for riders of two-wheeled vehicles, well below the general limit.
