Samothrace doesn't feel like other Greek islands, and that's the point. There's no airport, no cruise crowds, just granite peaks dropping straight into the sea and a scatter of villages that still run on their own quiet schedule. A scooter is how you get to know it properly: you can be swimming in the cold granite pools below the Vathres waterfalls by mid-morning, wandering the ruins of the Sanctuary of the Great Gods by noon, and watching the light fade over Kamariotissa harbour with a plate of grilled fish by evening. Few islands pack this much contrast into so short a ride.
Part of what makes this such a natural place to rent a scooter in Samothrace is how little else there is to compete with you on the road. Traffic is close to nonexistent, distances between the port, the villages and the swimming spots are short, and buses run thin enough that you'll want your own wheels anyway. The island's terrain does the rest of the selling: flat coastal stretches near Kamariotissa give way to steep, winding roads climbing into the foothills of Mount Saos, and a scooter handles both without breaking a sweat — unlike a car, which struggles on the narrower lanes leading into the gorges.
For mopeds up to 50cc, a category AM licence is enough, and the minimum age is generally 16, though rental companies on the island often set the bar higher. Anything from 125cc up requires a matching motorcycle licence (A1, A2 or A) — a car licence won't cover you here, and riding outside your category voids your insurance. If your licence isn't from the EU, bring an International Driving Permit. Expect to leave a deposit, usually a credit-card hold, with the exact amount set by the individual operator.
Prices swing a lot with the season. In low season you're looking at roughly EUR 3-4 per day, high season climbs to about EUR 12-18 per day, and premium models run EUR 18-25 per day.
If you can, aim for May-June or September-October: the roads are calm, the sea is still warm enough to swim in below the waterfalls, and prices sit well under high-season rates. July and August are the busiest and most expensive months, with heat regularly above 35°C making full gear uncomfortable, so book ahead if that's your only window. Many shops close entirely from around November to March, so this isn't a realistic time to plan a trip.
Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for riders and passengers, and enforcement is strict with real fines behind it. Speed limits top out at 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on the open road, both of which cover most of what you'll ride here. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, but a stricter 0.2 g/l applies if you're a novice rider. Keep in mind that rental insurance almost always excludes unpaved roads and off-road use, so stick to the tarmac, especially around the gorges and waterfall tracks.
