Samos does not feel like the kind of island you stand still on. It curls around a mountainous spine, with the harbour town of Vathy on one side and, further south, the ancient port of Pythagorio and the ruined columns of the Heraion of Samos on the other. Rent a bicycle and the island opens up: pine-covered slopes above Kokkari, a waterfall to cool off at near Karlovasi, sandy coves that no bus route quite reaches. This is a place best covered on two wheels, at your own pace, stopping wherever the view asks you to.
Public transport on Samos is thin and distances between villages are short — often under 30 or 40 km — which makes a bicycle the natural way to see it properly. Coastal roads run flat and scenic between Vathy and the Heraion, while inland routes climb steeply toward mountain villages like Manolates, rewarding the effort with panoramas over the Aegean. Narrow lanes and tight harbour parking in places like Pythagorio also favour a bike over a hire car, letting you slip into corners a car never could.
No licence is required to hire a bicycle in Greece, and there's no minimum age set by law — most rental shops simply expect riders to be old enough to handle the terrain safely. You won't need an International Driving Permit either. A small deposit, usually held on a credit card, is standard practice and the amount varies by operator and by the bike itself.
Bicycle rental prices on Samos track the same seasonal pattern as the island's scooters and motorbikes, though bikes themselves sit at the lower end of that range. Expect the cheapest rates outside July and August, with prices climbing as the island fills up in high season.
May, June and September are the sweet spot — mild temperatures for climbing to Manolates or the Ampelos viewpoint, and rental shops fully open. July and August bring the highest prices and heat that can pass 35°C, making long rides tougher going. Many operators close down over winter, so if you're travelling between November and March, book ahead to confirm someone's actually open.
Greece drives on the right, and while cyclists face fewer formal requirements than scooter or motorbike riders, it's worth riding as if the same rules apply: stay visible, keep to the right, and take mountain bends slowly since island roads can be narrow, gravel-strewn and poorly lit. Helmets aren't legally mandatory for cyclists here, but wearing one is sensible on the descents. Speed limits for motor vehicles run up to 50 km/h in villages and higher on open roads, useful context for judging the traffic you'll be sharing the road with, and the country's strict drink-driving limits are a good reminder to stay alert on any two-wheeler.
