Preveza sits where the Ionian coast unfolds into quiet harbours, ancient ruins and beaches that most package tourists never reach. Rent a motorcycle here and you can trade the fixed schedule of a bus for your own route — out along the coast road to Monolithi Beach for an afternoon swim, or up to the Zalongo Monument for a view over the Ambracian Gulf that no tour bus stop can match. A bike turns Preveza from a single town into a whole region you can explore in a day.
The roads around here suit two wheels far better than four. Distances between the sights are short but the streets in Preveza's old harbour are narrow, and parking a car near the waterfront in summer is more trouble than it's worth. On a motorcycle you can slip through town, then open up on the open coastal roads toward Parga or Ammoudia without ever hunting for a space to park.
The licence you need depends on the bike: mopeds up to 50cc call for at least category AM, while anything from 125cc up requires the matching motorcycle category, A1, A2 or A. A Greek rental shop won't accept a plain car licence as a substitute, so check your category before you book. Minimum age is generally 16 for the smallest mopeds and 18 for motorcycle categories, though many rental companies set their own higher minimum. If your licence isn't from the EU, bring an International Driving Permit. Expect to leave a deposit, usually a credit-card hold, with the exact amount set by the individual operator.
Average rental price runs from 20-25 EUR per day in low season up to 30-45 EUR per day in high season, with premium models running 45-70 EUR per day.
High season runs through July and August, when prices climb and popular models sell out early — book ahead if you're travelling then. Low season stretches from November to March, when many rental shops scale back or close altogether. For the best mix of good weather and easy availability, aim for late spring or September and October, when you'll also catch the cheaper end of the price range.
Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger on any motorcycle or scooter, and police enforcement is strict with substantial fines for skipping one. Speed limits sit at 50 km/h in built-up areas, 90 km/h on open roads and 110 km/h on dual carriageways. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l for most drivers, but motorcyclists and novice drivers face a stricter 0.2 g/l limit, so it's safest to skip the wine at lunch if you're riding that afternoon. Keep your licence, IDP and rental papers with you at all times, and remember that rental insurance almost always excludes unpaved roads and beaches — stick to the tarmac.
