Salamina rarely shows up on the postcards, and that is exactly its appeal. A short ferry hop from Perama to Paloukia drops you on an island where quiet, two-lane roads wind past pine forests, sleepy harbor villages and viewpoints where the Battle of Salamis once played out beneath your feet. Ride down to Peristeria Beach for a swim, or take the coastal road into Selinia, where old harbor houses face the water and tavernas spill onto the promenade. On a motorcycle, the whole island opens up in a single afternoon.
Salamina suits two wheels better than most Greek islands. The local bus network barely reaches the pine forests and southern beaches, and traffic bunches up around the more industrial north near Paloukia, where parking is tight. A scooter or small motorcycle sidesteps all of that: you roll straight off the ferry, skip the queues, and can pull over at a cove or a hillside cave whenever something catches your eye — something a car, or a bus timetable, simply won't let you do.
For a 50cc scooter, an AM category licence is enough, and the minimum age is 16. Anything from 125cc up requires the matching motorcycle licence — A1, A2 or A depending on power — and riders must be at least 18. A standard car licence does not count as a substitute in Greece. Non-EU visitors need an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence. Rental shops will also ask for a deposit, usually held on a credit card, with the amount set by each operator.
Expect to pay around 20-25 EUR per day for a 50cc scooter in the quieter months, rising to 30-40 EUR per day for a 50cc-125cc scooter in July and August, when demand from Athenian day-trippers peaks. A bigger, more powerful 150-300cc bike in high season can run 45-60 EUR per day.
If you're after the best rates and an empty road, aim for the low season between November and March, though many island rental shops close for winter entirely. May, June, September and October give you warm weather, thinner crowds and reasonable prices — arguably the sweet spot for riding. If you're set on July or August, book ahead: this is when prices peak and scooters run short.
Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger, and police enforcement is strict, with substantial fines for skipping one. Speed limits top out at 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on the open road outside them. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, but a stricter 0.2 g/l applies to motorcyclists, so it's best to skip alcohol entirely before riding. Keep your licence, IDP, rental agreement and insurance papers with you at all times, and stick to paved roads — insurance typically excludes dirt tracks and beaches altogether.
