Euboea rewards anyone willing to cover ground, and there's no better way to do it than on two wheels. Point a scooter north from Chalkida and within a couple of hours you're soaking in the seafront hot springs of Edipsos, or you can head for the hills instead, climbing toward Dirfys where the air cools and the views stretch across the whole gulf. The island rarely feels crowded once you're past the capital, and that's exactly the point.

Distances here are made for a bike, not a car. The coastal road past Rovies and Limni winds through olive groves at a pace that lets you actually notice them, and the mountain routes up to Steni Dirfyos have enough hairpins that a scooter's agility beats any four-wheeled alternative. Traffic outside Chalkida is light, parking is never an issue, and pulling over for a photo of the gulf costs you nothing.

Top 10 things to see in Chalkida by motorcycle

  1. Edipsos (Loutra Aidipsou) thermal springs — a seafront town famous for its hot springs, and a satisfying long ride up the island.
  2. Drimonas Waterfalls — shaded forest pools just inland from Edipsos, an easy detour once you're already up there.
  3. Rovies coastal road — olive groves lining the Evian Gulf, one of the most relaxed stretches of tarmac on the island.
  4. Limni — a stone harbor village that makes a natural stop on the west-coast run.
  5. Evripos Bridge — the sliding bridge over Chalkida's tidal strait, worth seeing before you even leave town.
  6. Dirfys (Dirfi) Mountain — Euboea's highest peak, with roads and trailheads that open up over the whole island.
  7. Steni Dirfyos — a cooler mountain village at the foot of Dirfys, with tavernas worth the climb.
  8. Kymi — a clifftop town on the east coast, gateway to the Skyros ferries.
  9. Karystos and Cape Kafireas — a Venetian castle and some of the windiest, most dramatic scenery in southern Euboea.
  10. Agios Dimitrios / Chiliadou Beach — a wild northeast beach reached by a winding descent you won't forget.

What do you need to rent a motorcycle in Chalkida?

For scooters up to 50cc, category AM covers you from age 16. Anything from 125cc up requires the matching motorcycle licence — A1, A2 or A — and a standard car licence won't be accepted as a substitute. Non-EU visitors should bring an International Driving Permit. Rental companies will hold a deposit, usually a credit-card authorisation, and many set their own minimum age above the legal floor, so it's worth checking before you book.

How much does it cost to rent a motorcycle in Chalkida?

Expect around 20–25 EUR per day for a basic scooter in low season, rising to 35–50 EUR per day in high season or for a larger 125–300cc bike. Where bigger touring motorcycles (300cc+) are available, count on 50–70 EUR per day and up.

  • Prices climb steadily from spring into July and August, the two priciest months.
  • November through March is the cheapest window, though many island rental shops close for the season.
  • Booking a little ahead in high season helps, since the best bikes sell out first.

When to book a rental motorcycle in Chalkida?

July and August are Euboea's high season — hot, busy, and the most expensive months to rent. November to March is low season, cheap but with limited availability as shops wind down for winter. May, June, September and October hit a comfortable middle ground: mild weather, fewer crowds, and prices that sit between the two extremes.

Local traffic rules in Chalkida

Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for rider and passenger alike, and police enforcement is strict. Speed limits run 50 km/h in towns, 90 km/h on open roads and up to 110–130 km/h on faster roads, though smaller-engine bikes have lower caps. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, tightened to 0.2 g/l for motorcyclists. Keep your licence, IDP, rental agreement and insurance papers with you whenever you ride, and stick to paved roads — insurance almost never covers dirt tracks or beach access.
