Picture swapping cramped buses and taxi waits for open coastal road, the sea on one side and pine forest on the other, as you head out from Nea Makri toward the ancient Marathon Tumulus or the quiet sands of Schinias Beach. Renting a motorcycle here turns a scattered handful of sights into a single easy loop, and lets you catch the sunset over Nea Makri's own harbour promenade before dinner.
Nea Makri sits on the Attica coast with fast, mostly open roads linking Marathon's archaeological sites, Schinias' pine forests, Rafina's port and the mountain roads around Penteli. These are distances that are awkward on foot or by infrequent local buses, but easy and scenic on two wheels. A motorcycle also makes the under-an-hour run into central Athens practical as a day trip, no car or taxi needed once you hit city traffic.
Your licence needs to match the bike's engine size: A1, A2 or A category motorcycle licence, depending on capacity, and rental shops in Greece are required to check this. Minimum age is generally 18, though some operators set the bar higher or require you to have held your licence for a minimum period. If you're travelling from outside the EU, bring an International Driving Permit. A deposit is standard practice too, usually held on a credit card, with the amount varying by operator and by bike.
Expect 25-30 EUR per day for a scooter or small motorcycle in low season, rising to 35-50 EUR per day in high season for the same class. If you're after something bigger, a touring or sport motorcycle from 500cc and up runs 60-90+ EUR per day at peak times.
High season runs July to August, when prices peak and the best bikes get booked out early — reserve well ahead if you're travelling then. Low season stretches from November to March, with the softest prices but also fewer riding days that suit an open-face helmet and a t-shirt. May, June, September and October hit a sweet spot: mild weather, thinner crowds and reasonable rates, so if your dates are flexible, aim there.
Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger, and enforcement is strict, so skip it and you're looking at a real fine. Speed limits are 50 km/h in town, 90 km/h on the open road and up to 110-130 km/h on faster highways, though smaller-engine bikes may be capped lower. The blood-alcohol limit sits at 0.5 g/l generally, but motorcyclists and new licence holders face a stricter 0.2 g/l. Keep your licence, IDP, rental agreement and insurance papers with you whenever you ride, and remember that heading off-tarmac — even onto a beach track — typically voids your insurance entirely.
