Veria doesn't announce itself the way Athens or Thessaloniki do, and that's exactly the point. Tucked against the edge of Mount Vermio with the Imathia plain spread out below, this is a town best discovered on two wheels, not through a bus window. Pull up at Elia Square as the light drops over the valley, then wind down into the Kyriotissa quarter where Byzantine churches sit tucked between cobbled lanes barely wide enough for a car. A scooter slips through where nothing else can, and within twenty minutes you can be climbing toward Vergina or dropping into the vineyards around Naoussa.

This is a compact, layered city, and that's exactly why it suits a scooter so well. The old quarters — Kyriotissa, Barbouta — are steep, narrow and largely car-unfriendly, while the places worth the detour, Vergina, Pella, Naoussa, the Vermio hairpins, all sit in that comfortable 10–40 km band a scooter eats up in half a day. Parking is instant and free wherever you stop, which matters a lot when the next church, taverna or viewpoint is only a few streets away.

Top 10 things to see in Veria by scooter

  1. Vergina Royal Tombs — a UNESCO-listed underground museum about 12 km out, holding the tomb of Philip II of Macedon.
  2. Elia Square — locals call it the balcony of Veria, a clifftop lookout over the Imathia plain and an easy first stop from the centre.
  3. Kyriotissa Quarter — cobbled lanes and Byzantine churches just behind Elia Square, made for slow riding and even slower wandering.
  4. Barbouta — the old riverside Jewish quarter along the Tripotamos, with weathered houses and a quiet memorial walk.
  5. Mount Vermio — hairpin roads climbing into forest and cooler air west of town, a classic loop for anyone on a scooter.
  6. Seli Ski Center — the winding mountain road up is worth the ride even outside ski season, for the views alone.
  7. Aliakmonas River Gorge — Greece's longest river carves a green gorge minutes from town, good for a riverside stop.
  8. Pella — Alexander the Great's birthplace and the old Macedonian capital, an easy day-trip from Veria.
  9. Naoussa — a wine town with vineyard roads and the Agios Nikolaos forest park, a genuinely scenic ride out.
  10. Veria Archaeological Museum and Byzantine churches route — a central stop that ties the museum to a signposted trail past the city's churches.

What do you need to rent a scooter in Veria?

For a 50cc moped you'll need at least a category AM licence; anything from 125cc up requires the matching motorcycle category, A1, A2 or A. A standard car licence won't cover you here. Riders from outside the EU should carry an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence. The legal minimum age is 16 for AM mopeds and 18 for the larger categories, though most rental operators set their own, often higher, threshold. Expect a deposit too, usually held on a credit card, with the amount set by the individual company.

How much does it cost to rent a scooter in Veria?

A basic 50cc scooter runs EUR 5–8 per day in low season and EUR 12–18 in high season, while a 125cc or automatic model typically costs EUR 20–30 per day.

  • Prices climb through spring and peak in July–August, the busiest and priciest stretch.
  • They ease off from autumn onward, with November to March the cheapest window to book.

When to book a rental scooter in Veria?

High season runs July through August, when demand is strongest and prices sit at their yearly peak — book ahead if you're travelling then. Low season stretches from November to March, with the lightest prices of the year but also the quietest weather for mountain rides. May, June and September strike a good balance: mild temperatures, thinner crowds, and roads up Vermio that are far more pleasant to ride than in the summer heat.

Local traffic rules in Veria

Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger, and enforcement is strict enough that it's not worth skipping. Speed limits sit at 50 km/h in town, 90 km/h on open roads and up to 130 km/h on motorways, though smaller-engine bikes are held to lower caps. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, but drops to a stricter 0.2 g/l for motorcyclists. Keep your licence, IDP if required, rental agreement and insurance papers with you whenever you ride, and stick to paved roads — insurance typically excludes dirt tracks and off-road riding entirely.
