Picture the road hugging the coast out of Limenas, marble dust glinting on the tarmac ahead, with the whole island laid out for you to explore at your own pace. Thasos rewards exactly this kind of freedom: one morning you're floating in the impossibly clear water at Giola Lagoon, and by afternoon you're parked above the harbor beneath the ruined walls of the ancient Acropolis. A scooter rental in Thasos turns the island into a string of small discoveries rather than a checklist of bus stops.
Thasos is barely 100km around, but that number hides a lot of character — the ring road twists along cliffs and coves, then climbs suddenly into pine-covered hills toward stone villages. A car feels clumsy here, hunting for parking in Limenaria or Panagia's narrow lanes, while a scooter slips through easily and lets you pull over the moment a viewpoint or a quiet beach catches your eye. Traffic stays light for most of the year, and the paved-but-curvy roads suit a 50–125cc scooter far better than anything bigger.
For scooters up to 50cc you'll need at least an AM category licence; anything 125cc or above requires a matching motorcycle licence (A1, A2 or A) — a plain car licence isn't accepted on its own in Greece. The minimum age is generally 16 for 50cc mopeds and 18 for the larger categories, though rental shops often set their own higher minimums. If your licence isn't from the EU, bring an International Driving Permit. Expect to leave a deposit, usually a credit-card hold, with the exact amount set by the individual operator.
Prices swing a lot with the season, so it pays to check dates before you book.
July and August are peak season on Thasos — prices climb and popular models sell out fast, so book ahead if you're travelling then. May, June, September and October give you the best mix of good weather and calmer roads, often at lower prices than midsummer. Many shops close entirely from November to March, so outside April-October, availability gets thin.
Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger, and police enforcement is strict, with substantial fines for skipping one. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on the open road, though island roads are often narrow and gravel-strewn enough that those limits feel generous. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, tightening to 0.2 g/l for motorcyclists — so it's simplest to treat riding and drinking as mutually exclusive. Keep your licence, IDP and rental papers with you at all times, and remember that leaving the tarmac, including for beach or dirt-track shortcuts, typically voids your insurance.
