Trade the ferry timetable and the single village bus for your own set of wheels and Samothrace opens up fast. This is a small, wild, mountainous island where the Aegean crashes against granite peaks, and a scooter lets you chase that scenery on your own schedule — from the ancient stones of the Sanctuary of the Great Gods to the cold river pools below the Fonias bridge. Renting a scooter in Samothrace isn't just convenient here; it's the way most visitors actually see the island.

There's really only one road worth knowing: a coastal ring connecting Kamariotissa, Chora, Therma and the beaches beyond, with a scattering of dirt tracks branching off toward waterfalls and quiet coves. Traffic outside the port town is close to nonexistent, distances between stops are short, and the terrain, while hilly, never demands anything bigger than a mid-size scooter. A car would only get in the way at the trailheads and river pull-offs where the real sights are — a scooter rental in Samothrace lets you park almost anywhere and just walk in.

Top 10 things to see in Samothrace by scooter

  1. Sanctuary of the Great Gods (Palaeopoli) — the island's premier archaeological site, findspot of the Winged Victory of Samothrace and its ancient mystery cult ruins, a short ride north of Chora.
  2. Fonias River and stone bridge — a Roman-era stone bridge over cold pools and waterfalls, just off the main coastal road and a classic swim stop.
  3. Gria Vathra waterfalls — a shaded gorge with rock pools near Therma, reachable by scooter plus a short walk.
  4. Vatos Beach — a remote beach with its own freshwater waterfall, reached via a dirt track (better suited to sturdier scooters).
  5. Kremasti (Kremasta Nera) waterfall — a dramatic hanging waterfall on the south coast, one of the island's most photographed spots, reached by a rougher track or hike from the road.
  6. Pachia Ammos Beach — the island's most popular sandy beach, with tavernas and easy swimming.
  7. Chora (Samothraki Town) — the hilltop capital with a Genoese castle and stone houses, a scenic climb rewarded with sea views.
  8. Kamariotissa — the port town and practical hub of the island, where most scooter loops start and end.
  9. Therma (Loutra) — a spa village with thermal springs and trailheads into the mountains on the north coast route.
  10. Profitis Ilias / Mount Saos foothill road — a winding mountain road through chestnut forests toward the island's highest peak, with sweeping views back down to the coast.

What do you need to rent a scooter in Samothrace?

For a 50cc moped you need at least an AM category licence and to be 16 or older; for anything from 125cc up you'll need the matching motorcycle category (A1, A2 or A). A standard car licence doesn't cover scooters in Greece, and rental shops do check. Non-EU visitors should carry an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence. Expect to leave a deposit, usually as a credit-card hold, with the amount set by the individual rental company.

How much does it cost to rent a scooter in Samothrace?

A basic 50cc scooter runs from about 5 to 9 EUR per day in the quiet shoulder months, rising to 15–25 EUR per day for a 50–125cc scooter in high summer. If you want a 125–160cc or higher-spec model, budget 25–35 EUR per day.

  • April, May and October are the cheapest months to rent.
  • July and August are the priciest, with demand at its peak.
  • Many rental shops close entirely from November through March.

When to book a rental scooter in Samothrace?

High season runs July through August, when prices peak and the best scooters sell out early — book ahead if you're travelling then. Low season stretches from November to March, though most rental shops simply shut for winter. The sweet spot is May, June, September or October: fewer crowds, gentler heat, and low-season-friendly prices.

Local traffic rules in Samothrace

Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger, and enforcement is strict. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on the open road, though on Samothrace's narrow, sometimes gravel-strewn lanes you'll rarely want to go that fast. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, but a stricter 0.2 g/l applies to motorcyclists. Keep in mind that rental insurance almost always excludes dirt tracks and beaches, so once you leave the tarmac — heading to Vatos or Kremasti, for instance — you're typically riding uninsured for that stretch.

If you wish to have more protection you can purchase additional CDW insurance, which limits your risk to the amount of your deposit. If you wish to rent a scooter without a deposit and with zero risk, you will need to add full insurance to your reservation.
