Trade the ferry timetable and the single village bus for your own set of wheels and Samothrace opens up fast. This is a small, wild, mountainous island where the Aegean crashes against granite peaks, and a scooter lets you chase that scenery on your own schedule — from the ancient stones of the Sanctuary of the Great Gods to the cold river pools below the Fonias bridge. Renting a scooter in Samothrace isn't just convenient here; it's the way most visitors actually see the island.
There's really only one road worth knowing: a coastal ring connecting Kamariotissa, Chora, Therma and the beaches beyond, with a scattering of dirt tracks branching off toward waterfalls and quiet coves. Traffic outside the port town is close to nonexistent, distances between stops are short, and the terrain, while hilly, never demands anything bigger than a mid-size scooter. A car would only get in the way at the trailheads and river pull-offs where the real sights are — a scooter rental in Samothrace lets you park almost anywhere and just walk in.
For a 50cc moped you need at least an AM category licence and to be 16 or older; for anything from 125cc up you'll need the matching motorcycle category (A1, A2 or A). A standard car licence doesn't cover scooters in Greece, and rental shops do check. Non-EU visitors should carry an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence. Expect to leave a deposit, usually as a credit-card hold, with the amount set by the individual rental company.
A basic 50cc scooter runs from about 5 to 9 EUR per day in the quiet shoulder months, rising to 15–25 EUR per day for a 50–125cc scooter in high summer. If you want a 125–160cc or higher-spec model, budget 25–35 EUR per day.
High season runs July through August, when prices peak and the best scooters sell out early — book ahead if you're travelling then. Low season stretches from November to March, though most rental shops simply shut for winter. The sweet spot is May, June, September or October: fewer crowds, gentler heat, and low-season-friendly prices.
Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger, and enforcement is strict. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on the open road, though on Samothrace's narrow, sometimes gravel-strewn lanes you'll rarely want to go that fast. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, but a stricter 0.2 g/l applies to motorcyclists. Keep in mind that rental insurance almost always excludes dirt tracks and beaches, so once you leave the tarmac — heading to Vatos or Kremasti, for instance — you're typically riding uninsured for that stretch.
