Preveza sits at the mouth of the Ambracian Gulf, where a strait not much wider than a river separates two coasts of the Ionian, and the best way to feel that geography is from a scooter seat. Set off from the harbor promenade in the old town, thread the narrow streets down to the seafront, then cross under the strait through the Aktio—Preveza tunnel and back again just for the novelty of it. From there the coast opens up: sandy Monolithi beach stretching toward Kastrosikia, the pine-lined approach to Ammoudia at the mouth of the Acheron river, and the postcard harbor of Parga with its Venetian castle above the bay, about 45 minutes north along a road that keeps the sea in view most of the way.
A car feels like overkill here and a bus tour moves too fast for a coastline built for stopping. Preveza's old town has tight, congested lanes and almost no parking for anything bigger than two wheels, so a scooter gets you in and out with none of the circling. Everything worth seeing — Nikopolis, the Acheron sites, the beaches, Parga — sits within a 20 to 50 minute ride on good coastal and countryside roads, close enough to reach several in a day, far enough that public transport won't get you there on your own schedule. If you're weighing whether to **rent a scooter in Preveza**, this is really the whole case for it: freedom to detour whenever a view or a beach bar catches your eye.
For a 50cc moped you'll need at least an AM category licence; anything 125cc and up calls for the matching motorcycle category (A1, A2 or A) — a car licence alone won't cover you here. The minimum age is 16 for AM mopeds and 18 for the motorcycle categories, though many rental shops set their own higher bar. Non-EU visitors should bring an International Driving Permit, and expect a deposit, usually held on a credit card, with the amount varying by operator and vehicle.
A basic 50cc scooter runs around 5–8 EUR a day in low season and 15–25 EUR in high season, while a 125cc or automatic premium model can reach 25–40 EUR a day at peak times.
High season runs July through August, when prices peak and the best scooters get booked out early, so reserve a few weeks ahead if you're travelling then. Low season stretches from November to March, with lower prices but limited shop availability since many operators only run from spring through autumn. May, June, September and October hit the sweet spot: milder weather, thinner crowds and shops fully open.
Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for rider and passenger alike, and police enforcement is strict, with fines that add up fast. Speed limits sit at 50 km/h in town, 90 km/h on open roads and up to 130 km/h on motorways, though smaller-engine bikes are held to lower limits. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, but only 0.2 g/l for motorcyclists, so it's best to skip alcohol entirely before riding. Keep your licence, IDP and rental papers with you, and stick to paved roads — insurance typically won't cover you off the tarmac.
