Kilkis doesn't announce itself the way the islands do — there's no ferry crowd, no strip of beach bars. What it has instead is space: quiet roads threading out to lakeside tavernas at Lake Doirani, and a short hop to the eerie green pool and waterfall at Skra. On two wheels, that whole spread of countryside opens up in an afternoon instead of staying out of reach.
This is a small provincial city, and that's exactly what makes it work so well on a scooter. Traffic is light, distances in town are short, and the lakes, mountains and border villages around Kilkis all sit within a 20–40 minute ride. A car feels like overkill here; a scooter handles the mix of town streets and open countryside roads without any fuss. It won't get you up the rougher, unpaved tracks into the Krousia or Paiko forests — for those, you'd want something stronger — but for stringing together everything else, it's the natural choice if you want to **rent a scooter in Kilkis**.
For mopeds up to 50cc, an AM category licence is enough, and the minimum age is 16. Anything 125cc or larger requires a matching motorcycle licence (A1, A2 or A) — a car licence isn't accepted as a substitute in Greece. If you're travelling from outside the EU, bring an International Driving Permit along with your licence. Rental companies will also ask for a deposit, usually held on a credit card, with the amount varying by operator and by vehicle.
Prices move with the season. In low season you're looking at roughly 5-8 EUR per day, rising to about 10-15 EUR per day in high season, and 15-20 EUR per day for a premium model.
High season runs July through August, when demand and prices both peak. Low season stretches from November to March, with the calmest, cheapest riding in November and December. If you're after the sweet spot — good weather without summer prices — May, June, September and October are worth booking ahead for.
Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger, and enforcement is strict, so don't skip one. In built-up areas the speed limit is 50 km/h, rising to 90 km/h on open roads. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l for most drivers, but it drops to a stricter 0.2 g/l for motorcyclists and for anyone in their first two years of holding a licence, so it's best to leave the driving to a clear head altogether.
