Kalamaria wakes up slow along its own stretch of the Thermaic Gulf, and that is exactly where a scooter earns its keep. Pick one up in the morning and you can be tracing the marina at Kalamaria Paralia before the cafes even fill in, then follow the coast road all the way into Thessaloniki, past joggers and fishermen and the odd stray cat sunning itself on a bollard. By the time you reach the White Tower, you will have covered in twenty minutes what a bus manages in the better part of an hour.
This corner of Greece was practically built for two wheels. Kalamaria sits right on the coastal edge of Thessaloniki, with the city center, the long waterfront, and a run of gulf-side beach towns all packed into a 5–25 km radius — close enough that a scooter makes the trip in minutes, but a slog by bus and pricey by taxi. Traffic around Thessaloniki gets thick fast, and parking spots vanish just as quickly, so being able to slip through a jam and park almost anywhere is less a perk than a real advantage. The coast itself stays flat the whole way, and only the climb up into the old town asks a bit more of the engine.
For mopeds up to 50cc, you need at least a category AM licence and to be at least 16 years old. For larger scooters from 125cc up, you will need the matching motorcycle category — A1, A2 or A — and a standard car licence will not cover you here. Rental shops in Greece are required to check that your licence matches the bike, and many set their own minimum age or licence-holding period on top of the legal one. Non-EU riders should carry an International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside their home licence, and expect to leave a deposit, usually as a credit-card hold, when you pick up the vehicle.
Average prices run from EUR 5–8 per day in low season up to EUR 10–15 per day in high season, with premium models reaching EUR 15–25 per day.
High season runs July through August, when prices peak and popular scooters can sell out days in advance — worth booking early if you are traveling then. Low season stretches from November to March, with the best prices but also thinner availability from some operators. If you want warm weather without the crowds or the July–August heat, May, June, September and October hit a comfortable middle ground for riding.
Greece drives on the right, and helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger on any scooter or moped — enforcement is strict and fines add up quickly. Speed limits sit at 50 km/h in built-up areas like Kalamaria and Thessaloniki, rising to 90 km/h on open roads outside town. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l for most drivers, but motorcyclists and riders in their first two years of licence face a stricter 0.2 g/l. Keep your licence, IDP, rental agreement and insurance papers with you whenever you ride, since checks do happen, especially in busy tourist areas.
