Picture mornings that start with the smell of salt air and end with sand still on your feet: that's Gerakas, a quiet village at the southern edge of Zakynthos where the sea, the dunes and the cliffs of Keri are all close enough to reach in an afternoon. You can rent a scooter in Gerakas on our website and set your own pace — stopping at Limni Keriou for a swim, watching the sunset from Keri Lighthouse, or tracing the cliff-edge road toward the Keri Caves without waiting on a bus timetable.

Gerakas sits right where Laganas Bay meets the Vasilikos peninsula, and that geography is exactly what makes a scooter the right call here. The beaches, coves and viewpoints are scattered across headlands and hillsides that are exhausting on foot and awkward to link by bus, while the roads themselves are quiet secondary lanes with light traffic. Most sights are only 10 to 20 minutes apart, and the hillier stretches near Keri are far easier on a motor than on a bicycle.

Top 10 things to see in Gerakas by scooter

  1. Gerakas Beach — the village's own protected loggerhead turtle nesting beach, backed by dunes and cliffs, just five to ten minutes from most rental shops.
  2. Keri Caves & Keri Lighthouse — sea caves and a sunset viewpoint at the island's southwestern tip, reached along a scenic cliff-edge road that's become a classic ride.
  3. Limni Keriou (Keri Lake) — a calm lagoon with natural rock pools and boats heading out to the Blue Caves and Shipwreck Beach.
  4. Laganas Beach — the island's longest sandy beach and its main resort strip, an easy ride along the bay.
  5. Kalamaki Beach — a quieter turtle-nesting beach between Laganas and Gerakas, ideal for a shorter loop.
  6. Marathonisi (Turtle Island) viewpoint, Agios Sostis — roadside stops overlooking the crescent-shaped island, a favourite photo break on the Keri road.
  7. Porto Roma — a secluded pebble-and-sand cove on the Vasilikos peninsula, with a taverna right at the water's edge.
  8. Agios Nikolaos Beach, Vasilikos — a scenic beach along the same coastal road as Porto Roma and Banana Beach.
  9. Banana Beach, Vasilikos — a well-known sandy beach with watersports, another stop on the peninsula loop.
  10. Zakynthos Town (Chora) — the island's capital, with its Venetian-era square, the Solomos Museum and the hilltop Bochali castle overlooking the harbour.

What do you need to rent a scooter in Gerakas?

For a 50cc scooter you'll need at least an AM category licence and to be 16 or older; for anything 125cc and up, a matching motorcycle licence (A1, A2 or A) is required, and a car licence won't cover it in Greece. Non-EU visitors should carry an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence. Rental shops usually ask for a deposit, either a credit-card hold or a cash sum, with the amount set by the individual operator.

How much does it cost to rent a scooter in Gerakas?

A basic 50cc scooter runs around 5-10 EUR per day in low season and roughly 15-25 EUR per day in high summer. Larger-cc scooters, ATVs and buggies typically cost 25-45 EUR per day.

  • Prices climb steadily from spring, peaking in July and August.
  • April-May and late September-October offer the cheapest rates while most shops are still open.
  • Booking a few days ahead in peak season helps you avoid sold-out fleets.

When to book a rental scooter in Gerakas?

July and August are the busiest and priciest months, with scooters selling out fast and temperatures often above 35°C. Many island rental shops close entirely from November through March, so the sweet spot is May-June or September-October, when the weather is still warm, roads are calmer, and rates sit well below peak-season levels.

Local traffic rules in Gerakas

Greece drives on the right, and helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger — enforcement is strict, with substantial fines. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on open roads, though Zakynthos's village lanes rarely call for anything close to that. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l for most drivers, but a stricter 0.2 g/l applies to riders in their first two years on a licence. Keep your licence, IDP and rental papers with you, and remember that leaving the tarmac for beaches or dirt tracks usually voids your insurance.
