Antiparos rewards anyone willing to leave the harbour behind. Beyond the whitewashed lanes of Chora, the island unfolds into quiet lanes, sun-baked hills and a coastline dotted with beaches that most day-trippers never reach. Hop on a scooter and within twenty minutes you can go from browsing the shops below the Antiparos Castle to swimming at Soros Beach, or climb toward the hilltop Faneromeni Monastery for a view over the whole Aegean. This is an island built for two wheels, not four.

At just 12 km long, Antiparos has one main road linking Chora to its beaches and the famous cave, which means a scooter is really all you need to see everything in a single day. Traffic is light, the terrain is mostly flat with a few gentle climbs, and a rental car would feel like overkill on roads this narrow. If you want to rent a scooter in Antiparos, you'll find it's by far the easiest and cheapest way to reach the beaches, viewpoints and villages scattered across the island.

Top 10 things to see in Antiparos by scooter

  1. Antiparos Castle (Kastro), Chora — a 15th-century Venetian castle-settlement right in the main town, an easy first stop and a good way to get your bearings before heading out.
  2. Antiparos Cave (Spilaio Antiparou) — a famous stalactite cave up near Agios Ioannis Theologos; the ride up alone offers some of the best views on the island.
  3. Agios Georgios — a south-coast village facing the islet of Despotiko, with tavernas and the boat crossing point marking the end of the road.
  4. Despotiko islet viewpoint / crossing — you can't ride to Despotiko itself, but the short boat from Agios Georgios to its ancient sanctuary is a popular add-on to the ride.
  5. Soros Beach — a sheltered sandy beach just a few kilometres from Chora, perfect for an easy swim stop.
  6. Glyfa Beach — a popular organised beach with clear water along a straightforward coastal ride.
  7. Psaraliki Beach — the closest beach to Chora, ideal for a quick dip before continuing further afield.
  8. Livadia Beach — a long sandy stretch just north of Chora, part of the same easy coastal loop.
  9. Faneromeni Monastery — a hilltop monastery on the west coast reached via a scenic uphill route, with sweeping Aegean views.
  10. Monastiri Beach — a remote beach near the island's northern tip; a longer ride that rewards you with a wilder, quieter coastline.

What do you need to rent a scooter in Antiparos?

For mopeds up to 50cc, a category AM licence is enough, and the minimum age is usually 16. Anything larger, from 125cc up, requires a matching motorcycle licence (A1, A2 or A) — a car licence alone won't cover you. If you're travelling from outside the EU, bring an International Driving Permit along with your regular licence. Rental shops will typically ask for a deposit, usually held on a credit card, with the amount depending on the vehicle you choose.

How much does it cost to rent a scooter in Antiparos?

Average rental prices range from 5-10 EUR per day in low season to 15-25 EUR per day in high season, with premium automatic models running 25-35 EUR per day.

  • Prices climb highest in July and August, when demand across the Cyclades peaks.
  • April, May and October offer the cheapest rates and the quietest roads.

When to book a rental scooter in Antiparos?

High season runs July through August, when scooters can sell out and prices sit at their highest — booking ahead is worth it if you're travelling then. Low season stretches from November to March, though many island rental shops close for winter entirely. For the best balance of good weather, open shops and lower prices, aim for May, June, September or October.

Local traffic rules in Antiparos

Greece drives on the right, and helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger — enforcement is strict, with real fines for skipping one. Speed limits top out at 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on open roads, though on an island this size you'll rarely need to go that fast. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l for most drivers, but motorcyclists face a stricter 0.2 g/l, so it's best to leave the scooter parked if you've been drinking. Keep to paved roads, too — rental insurance almost always excludes dirt tracks and off-road riding.
