Anafi rewards the traveller who's willing to leave the ferry dock and go looking. From the port at Agios Nikolaos, the whitewashed lanes of Chora climb into view within minutes, and beyond them the island unfolds into empty coastal roads, quiet monasteries and beaches most people never reach. Hop on a scooter and you can be swimming at Klisidi before your coffee gets cold, or chasing the sunset along the road toward Roukounas by afternoon. This is the kind of place where a rented scooter turns a two-day stopover into a proper adventure.

Anafi is tiny, and that's exactly why a scooter suits it so well. Nothing on the island sits more than about 15km from Chora, but there's essentially no public transport to connect the dots, so without your own wheels you're stuck walking or hoping for a lift. The roads are mostly quiet and low-traffic, though a few stretches turn rough or unpaved as they climb toward sights like the Kalamos monastery — easy enough on two wheels, awkward in a car. If you want to **rent a scooter in Anafi** and actually see the island rather than just the village around the port, this is how everyone does it.

Top 10 things to see in Anafi by scooter

  1. Chora (Anafi Town) — the island's main village above the port, with whitewashed lanes, tavernas and views back over the Aegean; the natural place to start any ride.
  2. Agios Nikolaos Port — where most riders pick up their scooter, and a lively spot for a coffee while boats come and go.
  3. Klisidi Beach — the closest sandy beach to Chora and the port, a short easy ride with a couple of tavernas, and a natural first stop.
  4. Roukounas Beach — one of Anafi's best-known beaches, a long stretch of sand reached by a slightly rougher road, popular for swimming and sunbathing.
  5. Monastery of Panagia Kalamiotissa — perched atop the Kalamos monolith at the island's eastern tip, reputedly one of the largest rock monoliths in the Mediterranean; the ride out plus the final hike up is Anafi's signature excursion.
  6. Ancient Anafi (Kastelli archaeological site) — ruins of the ancient and medieval settlement near Kastelli, worth the detour for the views and the sense of the island's older history.
  7. Monastery of Zoodochos Pigi — a quieter monastery inland from Chora, good for a scenic detour into rural Anafi away from the coast.
  8. Katsouni Beach — a more remote, less crowded beach further along the south coast, ideal if you want to get away from the main strip.
  9. Vagia — a small settlement and beach on the west side, a pleasant alternative loop for an afternoon ride with fewer visitors.
  10. Coastal road to the eastern tip (Roukounas–Kalamos route) — the full ride from Chora past Roukounas toward Kalamos strings together most of the island's best coastal scenery in one half-day loop.

What do you need to rent a scooter in Anafi?

For scooters up to 50cc, a category AM licence is enough, and the minimum age is 16 — though most rental shops set their own minimum, usually a bit higher. Anything from 125cc up needs a proper motorcycle licence (A1, A2 or A) matched to the bike's power, and a standard car licence won't cover you. If your licence isn't from the EU, bring an International Driving Permit. Expect to leave a deposit, usually held on a credit card, with the amount varying by shop and vehicle.

How much does it cost to rent a scooter in Anafi?

Prices swing a lot between seasons on an island this small and this seasonal.

  • Low season (roughly April–May and October): around EUR 5–10 per day.
  • High season (July–August): EUR 15–25 per day for a standard scooter, and EUR 25–35 for a premium model.
  • Book earlier in July and August, when demand is highest and scooters can sell out.

When to book a rental scooter in Anafi?

July and August are Anafi's high season, with the best weather, the busiest port and the highest prices. April, May and October are calmer and considerably cheaper, with fewer crowds on the roads to Roukounas and Kalamos. Many shops on Anafi close entirely over winter, so outside roughly April to October, availability can be limited — plan around the season rather than around the calendar date.

Local traffic rules in Anafi

Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger, and police do check. Speed limits top out at 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on the open road, though Anafi's narrow, gravel-strewn lanes rarely let you get near that. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, but drops to 0.2 g/l for motorcyclists and new licence holders. Keep in mind that insurance almost always excludes unpaved tracks and beaches, so once the tarmac ends, you're riding at your own risk.
