Aegina Town has a rhythm you feel the moment you step off the ferry — fishing boats bobbing beside the ancient column at Kolona, tavernas opening their shutters, and a whole island waiting just beyond the harbor. The best way to meet it is on two wheels. Ride out to the Temple of Aphaia among the pines, or follow the coast road down to Perdika for grilled fish with your feet nearly in the water. A scooter turns Aegina from a day trip into a place you actually explore.
Aegina is small enough to ride end to end — roughly 10km across — and outside the port the roads are quiet, flat-to-gently-hilly, and easy to read. A car feels like overkill here, and the buses run too rarely to chase a schedule. On a scooter you can cover the temple, the ruins, and a beach village in one loop, then double back for a swim before dinner. If you're weighing a scooter rental in Aegina Town, this is exactly the kind of island where it pays off.
For mopeds up to 50cc you'll need at least a category AM licence; larger scooters from 125cc require the matching motorcycle category. A standard car licence generally isn't accepted as a substitute in Greece, and if you hold a non-EU licence you should bring an International Driving Permit. Minimum age is usually 16 for 50cc mopeds and 18 for bigger machines, though rental companies often set their own higher age limits. Expect a deposit, typically held on a credit card.
Prices swing a lot with the season. In low season you're looking at roughly 5-10 EUR per day, while high season runs about 15-25 EUR per day, with premium models reaching 20-30 EUR.
July and August are Aegina's high season — hot, crowded, and the time scooters sell out fastest, so book ahead if you're travelling then. November to March is low season with the best prices, though several rental shops close for the winter. May-June and September-October sit nicely in between: quieter roads, milder heat, and prices that haven't yet hit the summer peak.
Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for rider and passenger alike, and police enforce this strictly with real fines. Speed limits top out at 50 km/h in town and 90 km/h on the open road, though island roads rarely call for anything near that. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, but a tighter 0.2 g/l applies to motorcyclists, so it's best to treat any ride as an alcohol-free one. Keep your licence, IDP, rental agreement and insurance papers with you, and stick to paved roads — heading onto dirt tracks or beaches usually voids your cover.
