Agathonisi barely counts as a dot on the map, and that is exactly what makes it worth riding. There are no rental cars here, no traffic lights, and no reason to be anywhere in a hurry. Pick up your bike at the little harbor of Agios Georgios, where fishing boats and tavernas share the same stretch of quay, then let the road climb toward Megalo Chorio and its quieter twin across the valley, Mikro Chorio. From there it is a short hop to a chapel with the best view on the island, and further out, a turquoise cove that most visitors never see.

This is an island built at scooter scale. The two villages, the port and the handful of beaches all sit within a few kilometers of each other, linked by roads too narrow and too quiet to bother with a car. A small **moped rental in Agathonisi** turns a walk that would eat your whole day into an unhurried afternoon loop, with time left over for a swim.

Top 10 things to see in Agathonisi by moped

  1. Agios Georgios (the port) — where you pick up the bike; the island's only harbor, lined with tavernas and small hotels, and the natural starting point of any ride.
  2. Megalo Chorio — the main village and administrative center, a short easy ride up from the port.
  3. Mikro Chorio — a tiny sister village facing Megalo Chorio across a valley, worth the short detour.
  4. Chapel of Agios Panteleimon — a whitewashed chapel on a hill near Mikro Chorio with a panoramic island viewpoint.
  5. Church of Agios Georgios (harbor church) — a blue-and-white church with a bell tower overlooking the port, a classic photo stop.
  6. Poros beach — one of the island's rare sandy beaches, with shallow turquoise water, reachable by scooter.
  7. Spilia — a quiet coastal spot and the trailhead for the walk down to Gaidouravlakos.
  8. Gaidouravlakos beach — a remote pebble beach with striking turquoise water; ride to Spilia, then finish on foot.
  9. Katholiko — a small sheltered anchorage where local fishing boats moor, a peaceful ride away from the port.
  10. The Tholoi — ancient domed stone structures on the island's east side, a good excuse for a longer loop.

What do you need to rent a moped in Agathonisi?

For mopeds up to 50cc, a category AM licence is enough, with a minimum age of 16. Anything larger, such as a 125cc scooter, calls for the matching motorcycle category (A1/A2/A) and you need to be at least 18. If your licence was not issued in the EU, bring an International Driving Permit. Expect to leave a deposit, usually held on a credit card, and remember that going off paved roads or onto the beach will void your insurance cover.

How much does it cost to rent a moped in Agathonisi?

Budget around 25 EUR per day in low season, rising to 35-40 EUR during the busy summer months. A larger 125cc scooter runs roughly 40-45 EUR per day.

  • Cheapest: May, June, September and October.
  • Priciest: July and August, when demand across the Dodecanese peaks.

When to book a rental moped in Agathonisi?

July and August are the busiest and most expensive months, and on an island this small a handful of bikes can sell out fast, so book ahead if you are travelling then. For better rates and quieter roads, aim for May, June, September or October. Many island operators close entirely from November through March, so a rental simply is not on offer in the depths of low season.

Local traffic rules in Agathonisi

Greece drives on the right, and helmets are compulsory for riders and passengers alike, with strict enforcement and real fines for skipping one. Speed limits top out at 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on open roads, though on Agathonisi's short village lanes you will rarely get close to either. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, but a stricter 0.2 g/l applies to motorcyclists and new licence holders, so it is simplest to leave the bike if you have been drinking. Keep your licence, IDP and rental papers with you whenever you ride.
