Spetses does not really do cars. Step off the ferry at Dapia and you will notice it almost immediately: no traffic jams, no honking, just bicycles, a few horse-drawn carriages and a steady buzz of scooters weaving along the harbour front past the old revolutionary cannons. That buzz is your cue. Rent a scooter and within ten minutes you can be swimming at Agioi Anargyroi Beach or tracing the wooden boatyards of Baltiza, well beyond the reach of anyone still relying on their own two feet.
The island practically bans private cars for residents and most visitors, so a scooter is not a luxury here — it is the normal way to get around. Roads are short, flat to gently rolling, and the almost-24km ring road circling the coastline is largely free of traffic, making it one of the most relaxed full-loop rides anywhere in the Saronic Gulf. A scooter rental in Spetses also gets you to the beaches that are a long, hot walk or a pricey taxi-boat ride from town.
For a 50cc scooter you need at least an AM category licence, and you must be 16 or older, though many rental shops set a higher minimum age. Anything 125cc and up requires the matching motorcycle category (A1/A2/A) — a car licence alone is not accepted in Greece. Non-EU visitors should bring an International Driving Permit. Expect a deposit, usually held on a credit card, with the amount set by the individual operator.
A basic 50cc scooter runs roughly EUR 5-10 per day in low season and EUR 15-25 per day in high season, with larger or automatic models priced a little higher, around EUR 25-35 per day at peak times.
July and August are high season, with the highest prices, the heaviest demand and scooters that sell out days in advance — book ahead if you are travelling then. November to March is low season, though few shops stay open through the winter. For the easiest riding and the best rates, aim for May, June, September or October, when the island is quieter and prices sit well below the summer peak.
Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for riders and passengers, and enforcement is strict. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on the open road, though on an island this size you will rarely need to go that fast. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l for most drivers, tightened to 0.2 g/l for motorcyclists, so it is best to skip the ouzo before you ride. Keep to paved roads, since rental insurance almost never covers dirt tracks or beaches, and carry your licence, IDP and rental papers with you at all times.
