Rethymno rewards anyone willing to leave the car behind. Duck out of the Venetian harbour on two wheels and within half an hour you can be standing under the palm trees at Preveli Beach or looking out over the Libyan Sea from the clifftop monastery above it. A scooter turns those postcard spots from a logistics problem into an easy afternoon.
The old town's lanes are narrow, cobbled, and often closed to cars altogether, so a scooter slips through where four wheels simply can't, then parks wherever you like. Once you're outside the centre, the appeal only grows: villages like Argyroupoli and Arkadi Monastery sit 20–40 km out, an easy hop by scooter but a long wait for an infrequent bus. The coastal and mountain roads out toward Plakias and the Amari Valley are winding but well surfaced, built for something light and nimble rather than a rental car.
For mopeds up to 50cc you need at least an AM category licence, and the minimum age is usually 16, though rental companies often ask for 18 or more. Anything from 125cc up requires a matching motorcycle licence — A1, A2 or A — a regular car licence won't cover it in Greece. Non-EU visitors should bring an International Driving Permit. Expect to leave a deposit, usually held on a credit card, with the amount set by the individual rental company.
A basic 50cc scooter typically runs 5-10 EUR a day in low season and 15-25 EUR during high season, with premium models reaching 25-35 EUR a day.
High season runs July-August, when demand is heaviest, prices sit at their yearly peak, and scooters can sell out if you wait too long — book a couple of weeks ahead if you're travelling then. Low season, November-March, brings the cheapest prices but also the risk that some rental shops are closed for winter. May-June and September-October hit a comfortable middle ground: milder weather, thinner crowds, and rates well below the August rush.
Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for rider and passenger alike, and the police do enforce it, with fines that sting. Speed limits are 50 km/h in town, 90 km/h on the open road, and up to 110-130 km/h on faster roads, though smaller-engine scooters won't get near those anyway. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, but a tighter 0.2 g/l applies to motorcyclists, so it's best to leave the scooter parked if you've been drinking. Keep in mind that insurance almost never covers dirt tracks or beaches, so stick to paved roads.
On our website you can rent the following types of scooters: classic scooter, Vespa, moped, motoroller, motoscooter, with a sidecar, with automatic or manual gears, three-wheeled scooters, large, maxi-scooter, touring, scooters with a windscreen and a roof, underbones, electric scooters.

Usually basic third-party insurance is included in the rental price. If you wish to have more protection you can purchase additional CDW insurance, which limits your risk to the amount of your deposit. If you wish to rent a scooter without a deposit and with zero risk, you will need to add full insurance to your reservation.
When you make an online scooter reservation you can also order the following extra services and equipment: integral helmet, GPS navigation, intercom, unlimited mileage, top case, side cases, boots, jacket, gloves, individual guide or tour, map, full insurance, one-way rental, delivery to your hotel, delivery to your address, delivery to the arrival point of your choice.
Most of our local moped rental companies have many years of experience and will provide you with a well-kept scooter, helmet, lock, top case, GPS, insurance and friendly service.
