There's a particular pleasure in rolling out of Pyrgos on two wheels with nowhere fixed to be. Within twenty minutes you can be walking among the fallen columns of Ancient Olympia, and within half an hour you can swap ruins for the harbour tavernas of Katakolo, watching cruise ships ease past the lighthouse. A scooter turns the Ilia region from a list of far-apart dots into one easy, unhurried loop.
Pyrgos itself is a modest provincial city, but its real appeal lies just outside it — Olympia, the coastal towns, the sandy stretches at Kourouta and Kaiafas are all 10 to 25km away, close enough to feel wasteful by taxi and too far to enjoy on foot. The roads out of town are quiet once you clear the centre, which makes this exactly the kind of place where **you can rent a scooter in Pyrgos** and actually use it every day of your trip, not just for one excursion.
For mopeds up to 50cc, a category AM licence is enough, and the minimum age is generally 16. Larger scooters from 125cc up require a matching motorcycle licence — A1, A2 or A — and riders must be at least 18. A car licence on its own is not accepted as a substitute in Greece. If you hold a non-EU licence, bring an International Driving Permit. Rental shops will also ask for a deposit, usually held on a credit card, with the amount varying by operator and vehicle.
Prices swing a fair amount across the year. In low season you can expect around 10-15 EUR per day, high season pushes that to 20-30 EUR, and premium models can run 30-40 EUR per day.
High season runs July through August, when demand and prices both peak and scooters can sell out at popular spots. Low season stretches from November to March, with the lowest daily rates but some shops reducing hours or closing altogether. If you're after warm weather without the crowds, May-June and September-October hit the sweet spot — book a few days ahead rather than same-day, especially near Olympia in summer.
Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger, and enforcement is strict with real fines behind it. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on the open road outside town. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, but drops to a stricter 0.2 g/l for motorcyclists and new drivers, so it's best to treat riding and drinking as mutually exclusive. Keep your licence, IDP and rental papers with you, and remember that straying onto dirt tracks or beaches usually voids your insurance outright.
