Piraeus rewards anyone who's willing to leave the ferry queues behind. Climb Kastella hill on a scooter and you're rewarded with the whole Saronic Gulf spread out beneath you, port cranes and all; drop back down toward Mikrolimano and you're weaving past yachts and taverna tables within minutes. It's the kind of place where fifteen minutes on two wheels replaces an hour of waiting for a bus that may or may not show up.
The old town, the harbor and the coast sit close together here, but they're stitched across hills and streets that get thick with traffic, especially near the port. A scooter slips through that congestion in a way a car simply can't, and it opens up the coastal road south toward Palaio Faliro and Glyfada — a stretch that's genuinely unpleasant to cover on foot but perfect for a lazy afternoon ride. If you want to rent a scooter in Piraeus, this is exactly the kind of terrain it was built for.
For mopeds up to 50cc you'll need at least an AM category licence; anything 125cc and above requires the matching motorcycle category (A1, A2 or A) — a standard car licence isn't accepted as a substitute in Greece. The minimum age is 16 for 50cc mopeds and 18 for the larger categories, though rental shops often set their own higher minimums. Non-EU visitors should carry an International Driving Permit alongside their licence. A deposit is standard practice too, usually held on a credit card, with the exact amount set by the individual rental company.
A basic scooter runs roughly 5-8 EUR per day in low season and 12-18 EUR per day in high season, while a larger-cc or newer model can go for 20-35 EUR per day.
High season runs July through August, when prices sit at their yearly peak and the most popular scooters get booked out fast — worth reserving ahead if you're travelling then. Low season stretches from November to March, with the cheapest rates of the year but also fewer shops open. If you'd rather skip both extremes, aim for the shoulder months, when the weather is still pleasant and prices haven't spiked yet.
Greece drives on the right, and helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger on any scooter — enforcement is strict and the fines aren't small. Speed limits top out at 50 km/h in built-up areas like central Piraeus, rising to 90 km/h on open roads outside town. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l for most drivers, but a stricter 0.2 g/l applies to riders in their first two years on the road. Keep your licence, IDP and rental papers with you whenever you ride, and stick to paved roads — insurance typically excludes any damage that happens off the tarmac.
