Athens gets all the attention, but the coastline just northeast of it holds something quieter. Nea Makri sits on a wide plain where the sea meets pine-covered hills, and the best way to feel that space is on two wheels. Rent a scooter in Nea Makri and you can be at the burial mound of the Marathon dead in minutes, or looping the water at Lake Marathon before lunch, with nothing between you and the road but open air and the smell of pine.
This stretch of coast rewards riders precisely because it wasn't built for tour buses. The sights around Nea Makri and Marathon sit several kilometers apart, strung out along a plain with light traffic once you're clear of the main Athens road, and public transport barely connects them. Roads are mostly flat with a few gentle climbs inland, so even a first-time rider feels at ease, and there's never a parking problem — you just pull up and walk in.
For a moped up to 50cc you need at least a category AM licence and to be 16 or older; anything 125cc and up requires a matching motorcycle licence (A1, A2 or A) and you must be 18. A standard car licence won't cover you here. Non-EU visitors should carry an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence. Rental shops will also take a deposit, usually held on your card, with the amount set by the operator.
Prices move a lot with the calendar. In low season you're looking at roughly 5–10 EUR per day, high season runs about 15–25 EUR per day, and a premium model can reach 25–35 EUR per day.
July and August are Greece's high season — expect the top end of the price range and scooters selling out, so book ahead. Aim for May, June, September or October if you can: the weather is still warm, roads are quieter, and prices sit well below the summer peak. If you're travelling November to March, note that many local rental shops scale back or close for the winter.
Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for rider and passenger alike, and police do check. Speed limits are 50 km/h in town and 90 km/h on the open road outside it. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, but only 0.2 g/l for motorcyclists, so it's best to skip alcohol entirely before riding. Keep to paved roads — insurance won't cover you on dirt tracks or the beach — and carry your licence, IDP and rental papers with you at all times.
