Picture rounding a bend on the coast road and finding the sea suddenly on both sides of you — that's Kolona Beach, where a thin ribbon of white sand links the shore to the islet of Agios Loukas, and it's the kind of view you only reach on two wheels. On Kythnos, a scooter rental is what turns a quiet Cycladic island into your own to explore, from the thermal springs bubbling into the sea at Loutra to the red-tiled rooftops of Dryopida tucked into the hills.
Kythnos rewards a bit of independence. Buses are infrequent and the island's charm is scattered across villages and coves that a fixed schedule simply can't cover. Roads here are mostly calm, two-lane routes with light traffic, so even a first-time rider feels at ease, while a scooter still closes the 20–30 minute gaps between Chora, Merichas and the best beaches far quicker than walking or waiting on a timetable. If you want to rent a scooter in Kythnos, this is really the only way to see it properly.
For mopeds up to 50cc you'll need at least a category AM licence; anything from 125cc up requires the matching motorcycle category (A1, A2 or A) — a car licence alone won't do in Greece. The minimum age is 16 for 50cc mopeds and 18 for the larger categories, though rental shops often set their own higher minimum and may ask for a valid licence held for a certain period. Non-EU visitors should carry an International Driving Permit alongside their licence. Expect a deposit on pickup, usually as a credit-card hold, with the amount set by the individual operator.
Average rental prices run from EUR 5–10 per day in low season up to EUR 15–25 per day in high season, with premium models reaching EUR 25–35 per day.
July and August are high season, when prices sit at their peak and scooters can sell out on such a small island, so book ahead if you're travelling then. November through March is low season, but with few shops even open, it's not the easiest time to find a bike. May, June and September strike the best balance — pleasant riding weather, reliable availability and gentler prices.
Greece drives on the right, and helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger, with fines for skipping one. Speed limits top out at 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on the open road, though Kythnos's narrow, winding lanes rarely call for anything near that. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, dropping to a stricter 0.2 g/l for motorcyclists. Keep in mind that insurance almost always excludes unpaved roads and dirt tracks, so it's best to stick to tarmac and carry your licence, rental agreement and papers with you at all times.
