Ios rewards anyone willing to leave Chora's cobbled lanes behind. Rent a scooter here and you can be sunning at Mylopotas Beach within minutes, then climb north toward the wild, windswept site locals point to as Homer's Tomb, with the Aegean stretching out below the whole way. Chase the coast south instead and the road eventually opens onto Manganari, a string of turquoise bays that feels like a different island entirely. Few places reward a bit of throttle the way Ios does.

The island is small but far from flat, and its roads twist between Chora, the port and a scatter of beaches spaced just far enough apart to make walking impractical. A car is overkill for such short hops, and buses won't get you to the dirt tracks leading to quieter spots like Kalamos. A scooter splits the difference perfectly — light enough for the switchbacks, quick enough to string several beaches into one afternoon.

Top 10 things to see in Ios by scooter

  1. Mylopotas Beach — the island's main sandy beach and watersports hub, a short ride down from Chora and a good first stop to get your bearings.
  2. Chora (Ios Town) — a whitewashed hilltop town of narrow lanes, churches and sunset bars, and the natural hub to start and end your rides from.
  3. Homer's Tomb, Plakotos — a rugged ride out to the island's northern tip, to the site tradition holds as Homer's grave, with sweeping Aegean views along the way.
  4. Manganari Beach — a cluster of turquoise bays on the south coast and one of the longer, most rewarding rides the island has to offer.
  5. Agia Theodoti Beach — a quieter east-coast beach with a small chapel, reached via a scenic road that cuts across the island's interior.
  6. Psathi Beach — remote and largely untouched, tucked near Agia Theodoti for travelers wanting to skip the crowds entirely.
  7. Kalamos Beach — a secluded south-side beach down a dirt road, a proper test of how far a scooter can take you off the beaten path.
  8. Skarkos — an Early Bronze Age hilltop site near Chora, an easy detour for a little history between beach stops.
  9. Paleokastro (Venetian Castle ruins) — a ruined fortress above Chora with panoramic views over town and harbor, reached by a quick, steep climb.
  10. Ormos (Gialos) Port — the island's waterfront hub of tavernas and boats, a natural loop point linking back to Chora and Mylopotas.

What do you need to rent a scooter in Ios?

For a 50cc moped you'll need at least a category AM licence; anything from 125cc up requires the matching motorcycle category (A1, A2 or A) — a car licence alone won't cover you. Riders must be at least 16 for AM mopeds and 18 for the larger categories, though most rental shops set their own higher minimums. Non-EU visitors should bring an International Driving Permit, and expect to leave a deposit, usually held on a credit card, with the exact amount varying by operator.

How much does it cost to rent a scooter in Ios?

Prices swing noticeably with the season, from around 10–15 EUR a day in the quieter months up to 20–35 EUR at the peak, with premium models running 30–45 EUR.

  • Cheapest in May and October, the shoulder months either side of the summer rush.
  • Highest in July and August, when demand and heat both peak.
  • Most shops close entirely from November through March, so winter rentals aren't an option.

When to book a rental scooter in Ios?

If you can, aim for May, June, September or October — you'll pay less and skip the sold-out lots that hit in high season. July and August are Ios at its busiest, so book well ahead if those are your only dates, and expect to pay toward the top of the range. Outside April through October, don't count on scooters being available at all.

Local traffic rules in Ios

Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger, and police enforcement is strict, with real fines attached. Speed limits are 50 km/h in towns and villages and 90 km/h on the open road, though Ios's narrow, winding lanes rarely let you get near that. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, but drops to a stricter 0.2 g/l for motorcyclists, so it's best to treat riding and drinking as mutually exclusive. Keep in mind that rental insurance almost never covers dirt roads or off-tarmac riding, so beaches like Kalamos are best approached with care.

If you wish to rent a scooter without a deposit and with zero risk, you will need to add full insurance to your reservation.
