Angistri feels made for two wheels the moment you step off the ferry at Skala. The village unfolds along a sandy waterfront lined with tavernas, and from there a pine-shaded lane leads you toward Aponisos Beach, a lagoon-like cove tucked beside a tiny islet that photographs better than any postcard. Keep going and the coastal road curls on to Megalochori, the island's second port, with the pines closing in overhead and the Saronic Gulf flashing between the trees. This is the kind of place where a rented scooter turns a short holiday into a proper small adventure.
Angistri measures barely five kilometres by three, so nothing on the island is ever more than a few minutes' ride away. Cars are scarce, the lanes between Skala and Megalochori are narrow and largely car-light, and the local bus only reaches the outer beaches a handful of times a day. A scooter, even a modest 50cc one, comfortably covers the whole island in an afternoon, which makes scooter hire in Angistri the natural way to see it rather than a luxury.
For a 50cc scooter you need at least a category AM licence, and the minimum age is generally 16, though many rental companies set their own higher age limit. Larger scooters from 125cc up require a matching motorcycle licence category. If you're travelling from outside the EU, bring your International Driving Permit along with your regular licence. Expect to leave a deposit, usually held on a credit card, with the exact amount set by the rental company.
Prices swing a lot with the season. In low season you can find a scooter for around 5–12 EUR per day, while high season pushes that up to roughly 15–25 EUR per day, and premium models can run 20–30 EUR per day.
Book ahead if you're travelling in July or August, since scooters get snapped up fast and prices sit at their highest. The shoulder months of May, June, September and October are quieter and cheaper, with plenty of availability and more comfortable riding temperatures. Outside that window, from November to March, most rental shops close for the season entirely, so it's worth checking ahead before you plan a winter visit.
Greece drives on the right, and helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger, with fines for skipping one. Speed limits top out at 50 km/h in built-up areas, though on an island this size you'll rarely need anywhere near that. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l for most drivers, but a stricter 0.2 g/l applies to novice riders. Keep in mind that rental insurance almost never covers dirt tracks or off-road riding, so stick to paved lanes, and always carry your licence, IDP and rental papers with you.
