Angistri feels made for two wheels the moment you step off the ferry at Skala. The village unfolds along a sandy waterfront lined with tavernas, and from there a pine-shaded lane leads you toward Aponisos Beach, a lagoon-like cove tucked beside a tiny islet that photographs better than any postcard. Keep going and the coastal road curls on to Megalochori, the island's second port, with the pines closing in overhead and the Saronic Gulf flashing between the trees. This is the kind of place where a rented scooter turns a short holiday into a proper small adventure.

Angistri measures barely five kilometres by three, so nothing on the island is ever more than a few minutes' ride away. Cars are scarce, the lanes between Skala and Megalochori are narrow and largely car-light, and the local bus only reaches the outer beaches a handful of times a day. A scooter, even a modest 50cc one, comfortably covers the whole island in an afternoon, which makes scooter hire in Angistri the natural way to see it rather than a luxury.

Top 10 things to see in Angistri by scooter

  1. Skala — the main port village, with the island's busiest sandy beach and waterfront tavernas, and the natural starting point for any ride.
  2. Megalochori (Milos) — the second port and prettiest village on the island, a short scenic ride from Skala through pine woods.
  3. Aponisos Beach — a sheltered, lagoon-like bay beside a small islet, one of the most photographed spots on Angistri.
  4. Dragonera Beach — a quieter, pine-backed beach reached along a dirt or forest track, ideal for escaping the crowds.
  5. Chalikiada Beach — a scenic pebble-and-sand stretch along the coastal road between Skala and Megalochori.
  6. Limenaria — a small, traditional inland hamlet worth the detour for a quieter, more authentic stop.
  7. Mariza (Marizatika) area — a forested hillside on the way into the island's interior, popular for short pine-forest rides.
  8. Skliri Beach — a low-key pebbly beach along the route south of Megalochori.
  9. Profitis Ilias — the island's high point, a short climb rewarding you with views over the Saronic Gulf.
  10. Coastal ring road Skala–Megalochori — the signature scenic loop through pine forest hugging the coastline, the classic Angistri scooter route.

What do you need to rent a scooter in Angistri?

For a 50cc scooter you need at least a category AM licence, and the minimum age is generally 16, though many rental companies set their own higher age limit. Larger scooters from 125cc up require a matching motorcycle licence category. If you're travelling from outside the EU, bring your International Driving Permit along with your regular licence. Expect to leave a deposit, usually held on a credit card, with the exact amount set by the rental company.

How much does it cost to rent a scooter in Angistri?

Prices swing a lot with the season. In low season you can find a scooter for around 5–12 EUR per day, while high season pushes that up to roughly 15–25 EUR per day, and premium models can run 20–30 EUR per day.

  • July and August are the priciest months, when demand on the island peaks.
  • May, June, September and October offer the best value, with many shops closing entirely from November to March.

When to book a rental scooter in Angistri?

Book ahead if you're travelling in July or August, since scooters get snapped up fast and prices sit at their highest. The shoulder months of May, June, September and October are quieter and cheaper, with plenty of availability and more comfortable riding temperatures. Outside that window, from November to March, most rental shops close for the season entirely, so it's worth checking ahead before you plan a winter visit.

Local traffic rules in Angistri

Greece drives on the right, and helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger, with fines for skipping one. Speed limits top out at 50 km/h in built-up areas, though on an island this size you'll rarely need anywhere near that. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l for most drivers, but a stricter 0.2 g/l applies to novice riders. Keep in mind that rental insurance almost never covers dirt tracks or off-road riding, so stick to paved lanes, and always carry your licence, IDP and rental papers with you.
