Amorgos rewards anyone willing to leave the ferry dock and go looking for it. Rent a scooter and the island opens up fast: one morning you're climbing the switchbacks toward the Panagia Hozoviotissa Monastery, wedged into a cliff face like it grew there, and by afternoon you're parked above Agia Anna Beach, the tiny pebble cove made famous by "The Big Blue," with nothing between you and the water but a short scramble down the rocks.

The island is built for two wheels. A single spine road runs the length of Amorgos, linking Katapola, Chora and Aegiali, with steep side roads dropping toward villages and coves the buses never reach. The whole island is under 30km end to end, traffic is light, and a small-displacement scooter handles every incline the map throws at you — far more freedom than waiting on the limited bus timetable or booking taxis for every beach.

Top 10 things to see in Amorgos by scooter

  1. Panagia Hozoviotissa Monastery — the 11th-century monastery built into the cliffside near Chora, reached by a short but steep ride and climb, and the island's defining sight.
  2. Chora (Amorgos Town) — a whitewashed hilltop capital with windmills and a Venetian kastro, a quick scenic climb up from Katapola.
  3. Agia Anna Beach — a tiny pebble cove below dramatic cliffs, best known as a filming location for "The Big Blue."
  4. Aegiali — the island's second port and main northern resort, with a long sandy beach and plenty of tavernas to ride to.
  5. Tholaria — a quiet traditional village above Aegiali with sweeping sea views, at the top of a winding uphill road.
  6. Langada — a picturesque village near Tholaria, a natural stop on the northern loop for a coffee and a view.
  7. Ancient Minoa (Kastri) — a hilltop archaeological site above Katapola with ruins and panoramic bay views.
  8. Katapola — the main port and the easiest starting point for a scooter loop, with a harborfront worth a walk.
  9. Kato Kambos Beach — a quieter beach on the road toward Aegiali, good for a swim away from the crowds.
  10. Mouros Beach — a small, relatively secluded cove just off the main coastal road, known for its clear water.

What do you need to rent a scooter in Amorgos?

For a 50cc moped you need at least an AM category licence, and the minimum age is 16, though many rental shops set their own higher minimum. Larger scooters from 125cc up require a matching motorcycle licence (A1, A2 or A) — a car licence isn't accepted as a substitute in Greece. Non-EU visitors should carry an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence. Expect a deposit, usually held on a credit card, with the exact amount set by the individual operator.

How much does it cost to rent a scooter in Amorgos?

Prices swing a lot with the season, so it pays to check the search form before you land.

  • Low season: roughly 5-8 EUR per day.
  • High season: roughly 15-25 EUR per day.
  • Newer or larger scooters, and quads, run 25-35 EUR per day at the July-August peak.

When to book a rental scooter in Amorgos?

July and August are the busy, expensive months, when good scooters can sell out — book ahead if you're travelling then. Many island rental shops scale back or close entirely from November to March, so the real bargains, where available, tend to cluster in the shoulder months of April, May and October, when prices drop and the island is far quieter.

Local traffic rules in Amorgos

Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for riders and passengers on any scooter or moped, and police do enforce it, with real fines for skipping one. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on the open road — plenty on an island this size. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, but only 0.2 g/l for motorcyclists, so it's best to treat any riding day as an alcohol-free one. Keep to paved roads: rental insurance almost never covers dirt tracks or beaches, and riding a bike outside your licence category voids your cover completely. Carry your licence, IDP and rental papers with you whenever you ride.

If you wish to rent a scooter without a deposit and with zero risk, you will need to add full insurance to your reservation.
