Amaliada does not feel like a place built for tour buses, and that is exactly its appeal. Rent a scooter here and the town's low, easy streets open onto everything the western Peloponnese actually has to offer — the ruins of Ancient Olympia inland, the working harbour at Kyllini, and the long sandy sweep of Kourouta Beach just minutes from the centre. Riding gives you the freedom to string these together in a single day, stopping wherever the light looks good, without waiting on a bus timetable or paying for a taxi each time.
Amaliada is flat and uncongested, which makes it a genuinely easy town to ride in rather than a place you merely tolerate on two wheels. Traffic stays light even in August, parking is a non-issue at every beach or ruin you'll want to visit, and the terrain barely rolls between the coast and the inland sites. You don't need anything powerful here — a small-displacement scooter handles Olympia, the Kaiafas coastline and the Kyllini loop without any strain, which keeps both the rental price and the learning curve low.
For mopeds up to 50cc you need at least an AM category licence, and you must be 16 or older. Larger scooters from 125cc and up require a matching motorcycle licence — A1, A2 or A — and a standard car licence is not accepted as a substitute in Greece. Non-EU visitors should carry an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence. Rental companies will also ask for a deposit, usually held on a credit card, with the amount varying by operator and vehicle.
Average rental prices run from 5-8 EUR per day in low season up to 12-18 EUR per day in high season, with premium models reaching 20-25 EUR per day.
High season runs July through August, when prices peak and the best scooters get booked out early. Low season stretches from November to March, with the lowest prices but fewer shops open. May, June, September and October hit a comfortable middle ground — warm enough to ride comfortably, with fewer crowds and better availability than midsummer.
Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger, and police enforcement is strict, with real fines behind it. Speed limits are 50 km/h in town, 90 km/h on open roads and up to 110-130 km/h on faster roads, though smaller scooters rarely reach those speeds anyway. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l for most riders, but tightens to 0.2 g/l for anyone in their first two years of holding a licence. Keep your licence, IDP and rental papers with you whenever you ride, and stick to paved roads — insurance almost never covers dirt tracks or beach riding.
