Patmos rewards you the moment you swap tired feet for two wheels. Wind up the switchback road from Skala to Chora, park at the edge of the old town, and walk into whitewashed lanes below the fortified monastery walls. Later, follow the coast road north to Lambi beach, where the shore is scattered with volcanic pebbles in every color, or head south to the quiet bay at Grikos. On a motorcycle, all of it is within easy reach in a single day.
Patmos measures barely 34 square kilometres, and almost everywhere you want to go sits along one spine road linking Skala, Chora and the coasts to the north and south. Village lanes are narrow and parking is tight, especially near the beaches and the monastery, so a scooter or small motorcycle slips in where a car simply can't. The road up to Chora has several switchbacks, and a light bike handles those curves far more comfortably than a rental car ever could.
For mopeds up to 50cc, a category AM licence is enough, and you can rent from age 16. Anything from 125cc and up requires a matching motorcycle category — A1, A2 or A — and riders must be at least 18; a car licence alone will not do in Greece. If your licence was issued outside the EU, bring an International Driving Permit (IDP). Rental shops will also ask for a deposit, usually held on a credit card, with the amount depending on the vehicle and operator.
Expect to pay around 20-25 EUR per day in low season and 35-45 EUR per day in high season, with premium models running 45-60 EUR per day.
If you're travelling in July or August, book ahead — bikes sell out and prices sit at their yearly high. Aim for May, June, September or October instead, when the roads are quieter, the weather is still excellent for riding, and rates are noticeably lower. Outside of that window, from November through March, many operators shut down for the season entirely, so availability becomes the real constraint rather than price.
Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger, and police enforcement is strict, with substantial fines for skipping one. Speed limits top out at 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on the open road, though Patmos's winding lanes rarely let you get near either figure. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, but only 0.2 g/l for motorcyclists, so it's best to treat any drinking and riding as off-limits. Keep in mind that rental insurance excludes unpaved roads and beaches, so stick to tarmac to stay covered.
