Andros doesn't feel like the rest of the Cyclades, and the best way to find that out is from the seat of a motorcycle. Wind through the old lanes of Chora, past neoclassical mansions and the harbor promenade, then climb into the hills toward the shaded spring at Sariza or the cascading fountains of Menites village. This is an island of mountains, gorges and forgotten coves, and a bike lets you feel every switchback of it rather than watch it pass through a car window.
The terrain here more or less demands two wheels. Andros runs along a single mountain spine, with narrow branch roads spidering off toward villages, springs and beaches that a car handles clumsily and the island's thin bus service barely reaches at all. On a scooter or small motorcycle you can dip into tight Chora lanes and park wherever you like, then head out to the coast or up into pine forest — coastal tarmac, mountain switchbacks and the odd gravel track, all in one day if you want it.
For a 50cc moped you need at least an AM category licence and to be 16 or older; anything from 125cc up requires the matching motorcycle category (A1, A2 or A), and Greek rental shops are obliged to check it. Non-EU visitors should bring an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence. Rental companies usually hold a deposit, often as a credit-card block, with the amount set by the operator and the size of the bike.
A basic 50cc scooter runs roughly 20–25 EUR per day in low season, while a scooter or small motorcycle in high season climbs to about 35–50 EUR per day. Step up to a larger motorcycle, 150cc or above, or a quad, and expect 50–70 EUR per day.
If you're travelling in July or August, book well ahead — this is high season, prices sit at their yearly peak, and popular models sell out early. Shoulder months like May, June, September and October offer calmer roads and friendlier prices, with less need to plan far in advance. Low season, November through March, is cheapest on paper, but many rental shops shut down entirely, so check availability before counting on it.
Greece drives on the right, and helmets are compulsory for every rider and passenger — enforcement is strict and fines add up quickly. Speed limits are 50 km/h in town, 90 km/h on the open road and up to 130 km/h on motorways, though island roads rarely call for anything close to that. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, but only 0.2 g/l for motorcyclists, so it's best to skip drinking before you ride. Keep in mind that rental insurance almost never covers dirt tracks or beaches, so routes like Achla or Zorkos are best enjoyed with care, and always carry your licence, IDP and rental papers with you on the road.
