Volos doesn't get the same postcard fame as Santorini or Mykonos, and that's exactly its charm. This harbor city on the Pagasetic Gulf is your launchpad onto the Pelion peninsula, a green mountain of stone villages, chestnut forests and hidden coves that most tourists driving rental cars never quite reach. Ride out past Makrinitsa's cobbled lanes or down through pine forest to Mylopotamos Beach, and you'll understand why locals consider this Greece's best-kept secret.
Pelion's roads are narrow, twisting and steep, climbing through village squares barely wide enough for two cars to pass. A car feels clumsy here; a scooter or motorcycle slips through effortlessly and parks in seconds on a plane-tree square. Volos itself is compact and flat, so you can start your day gliding along the harbor promenade before pointing the handlebars uphill into the mountains — no other way to get around covers both worlds this well.
For a 50cc moped, category AM is enough. Anything from 125cc up requires the matching motorcycle licence (A1, A2 or A) — a car licence won't cover you. Rental shops will ask for a deposit, usually held on a credit card, and if your licence isn't from the EU you'll need an International Driving Permit alongside it. Minimum age is generally 16 for a 50cc moped and 18 for anything larger, though many operators set their own, higher bar.
A basic scooter starts around EUR 20–30 per day in low season, with our own listings anchored near EUR 25/day. Larger or premium bikes cost more, especially in August.
July and August are peak season — prices climb and popular bikes sell out early, so book ahead if you're travelling then. November through March is quietest and cheapest, though some smaller Volos operators trim their hours or close altogether. For the best mix of good weather and easy availability, aim for May–June or September–October.
Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger, and police enforcement is strict, with real fines behind it. Speed limits run 50 km/h in town, 90 km/h on open roads and up to 130 km/h on motorways, though smaller-engine bikes have lower caps. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, but drops to a strict 0.2 g/l for motorcyclists — so it's best to skip the drink before you ride. Keep your licence, insurance papers and rental agreement with you at all times, and remember that leaving the tarmac — even for a quick beach shortcut — typically voids your insurance entirely.
