Picture swapping the tour bus for a motorcycle and a road that climbs straight from the harbour at Tinos Town up into marble-village country. Panagia Evangelistria watches over the port as you set off, but within twenty minutes you can be threading past dovecotes toward Kardiani, with the sea and Syros opening up below the terraces. This is an island built for two wheels, not four.
Tinos rewards riders precisely because it punishes drivers. The roads twist tightly through hill villages, switchback up to lookouts like Exombourgo, and narrow to little more than a lane once you're inside a place like Volax or Pyrgos. A car struggles to park in these squares; a scooter slips in without a second thought, and a rental motorcycle gives you the extra pull needed for the steeper climbs. If you want to actually reach Tinos rather than just skirt its coast road, riding is how locals do it.
For scooters up to 50cc you'll need at least an AM category licence; anything 125cc and above requires the matching motorcycle category, A1, A2 or A. A standard car licence isn't accepted as a substitute in Greece. Minimum age is generally 16 for 50cc mopeds and 18 for the larger categories, though most rental shops set their own, higher minimum. Non-EU visitors should carry an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence, and expect to leave a deposit, usually a credit-card hold, with the rental company.
A basic 50-125cc scooter runs roughly 20-25 EUR per day in low season, rising to 35-45 EUR per day in July and August. Step up to a larger 150-300cc motorcycle, or an ATV/quad, and peak-season prices climb to 45-70+ EUR per day.
July and August are Tinos's high season, when scooters and quads sell out fast and prices sit at their peak, so book well ahead if you're travelling then. November to March is low season with the best rates, though many island rental shops close entirely over these months. May, June and September strike the best balance: quieter roads, comfortable riding temperatures and prices that haven't yet hit the summer peak.
Greece drives on the right, and helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger on scooters, mopeds and motorcycles, with strict enforcement and real fines for skipping one. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on the open road, though Tinos's narrow, winding lanes rarely let you approach either. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, but a stricter 0.2 g/l applies to motorcyclists, so it's simplest to treat riding and drinking as mutually exclusive. Keep to paved roads, too: rental insurance almost always excludes dirt tracks and beaches, so leaving the tarmac can void your cover entirely.
