Picture yourself leaning into a hairpin bend on the road up to Profitis Ilias, the whitewashed cube of the monastery growing smaller behind you as the whole island unfolds ahead — Kastro's cliffs on one side, Kamares harbour on the other. That's what a couple of hours on two wheels gets you here. Sifnos rewards riders who can duck down to Vathi for lunch on the sand, then cut across to Chrysopigi for sunset, all before the ferry crowds even find their bearings.
This is not an island built for cars. Villages like Apollonia and Artemonas run on lanes barely wide enough for a scooter, parking is scarce, and the coast roads twist tightly around cliffs and coves. A scooter or small motorcycle slips through where a car would stall, and it turns a distant beach or a monastery on a hilltop into a twenty-minute detour rather than a half-day expedition. If you want to rent a scooter in Sifnos, this is exactly the kind of island where it pays off.
For mopeds up to 50cc you'll need at least a category AM licence; anything 125cc and above calls for the matching motorcycle category (A1, A2 or A) — a car licence alone won't cover you here. Minimum age is generally 16 for the smaller mopeds and 18 for the bigger bikes, though rental companies often set their own, higher minimums. Non-EU visitors should carry an International Driving Permit alongside their licence. Expect a deposit, usually held on a credit card, with the amount depending on the operator and the bike.
A basic scooter runs roughly 20–25 EUR per day in low season, climbing to about 30–40 EUR in high season; larger automatic bikes or a buggy can reach 40–60 EUR a day.
High season runs July through August, when prices sit at their highest and popular models sell out fast — book well ahead if you're travelling then. Low season stretches from November to March, though many island rental shops close for winter entirely. The sweet spot is May, June, September and October: milder weather, thinner crowds, and gentler prices, with less need to book far in advance.
Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger, and police do enforce this on the islands. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on open roads, though Sifnos's narrow, winding lanes rarely let you get near that. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, but a stricter 0.2 g/l applies to motorcyclists, so it's best to skip the wine at lunch if you're riding back afterwards. Stick to paved roads, since insurance typically excludes dirt tracks and beaches — and if you want to rent a scooter in Sifnos, just use the search form at the top of the page. Have a nice trip!
