Picture the road unspooling along Samothrace's north coast, forest on one side and the Aegean glinting on the other, with nothing ahead but the odd goat and a curve toward the next swimming hole. This is not an island of traffic jams or tour buses — it's raw, mountainous, and made for two wheels. Ride out from the port and within half an hour you can be cooling off at the Vathres waterfalls on the Fonias river, or soaking in the hot springs at Therma. If you want to rent a motorcycle in Samothrace, this is exactly the kind of morning that's waiting for you.
Samothrace is small — under 20 km across — but its single ring-ish road climbs hard toward Mount Saos and drops again toward scattered beaches that buses simply don't reach. A car feels clumsy on the narrower mountain lanes; a scooter or small motorcycle threads through easily, and with almost no traffic to speak of, you can stop wherever a view or a waterfall catches your eye. A motorcycle rental in Samothrace is less a convenience here than the natural way to see the island.
For anything over 50cc you'll need a motorcycle licence matched to the bike's category — A1, A2 or A — and rental shops are required to check it. Smaller mopeds up to 50cc need at least category AM, with a minimum age of 16; motorcycle categories require you to be 18. Non-EU visitors should bring an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence. Expect to leave a deposit, usually held on a credit card, with the amount set by the individual rental company.
Budget around EUR 20–25 per day in low season, rising to EUR 30–40 in high season, with premium models running EUR 40–55 per day.
High season runs July to August, when the island is busiest and prices peak — book a few weeks ahead if you're travelling then. Low season stretches from November to March, quieter and cheaper, though some operators pause for the winter. Late spring and September are a sweet spot: pleasant riding weather and easier availability.
Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger, and enforcement is strict. Speed limits top out at 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on the open road, though the island's steep, narrow lanes rarely call for anything near that. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, but a stricter 0.2 g/l applies to motorcyclists, so it's best to ride sober. Stick to paved roads — rental insurance almost always excludes dirt tracks and off-road riding.
