Coming down the coast road from Athens, Megara feels like the moment the city finally lets go. Swap the bus timetable for a set of handlebars and you can be climbing toward the ruined walls of Palaiokastro Hill before lunch, then cooling off on the sand at Alepochori Beach by afternoon — two completely different moods, half an hour apart, with nobody but you deciding the order.
This stretch of coast between Athens and Corinth was practically made for two wheels. The seafront roads run flat and easy, perfect for cruising between beaches and villages, while the flanks of Mount Geraneia and the Pateras range throw in real switchbacks for anyone who wants a proper ride. A car struggles to string all that together in one day, and parking in Megara's tight old-town streets is more hassle than it's worth — a nimble scooter or motorcycle just goes where a car can't.
For scooters up to 50cc, category AM is enough, and the minimum age is 16. Anything from 125cc upward needs the matching motorcycle licence — A1, A2 or A — and riders must be at least 18. A standard car licence won't cover you here, so don't count on it. Non-EU visitors should bring an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence. Expect a deposit, usually held on a credit card, with the exact amount set by the individual rental company.
Prices swing a fair bit with the season, but our own listings anchor around 25 EUR per day in the quieter months.
July and August are the busiest and priciest months, so book ahead if you're planning a summer trip — good bikes sell out. November to March is low season, with the calmest prices but also the coolest weather. If you want the sweet spot, May-June and September-October bring comfortable temperatures and easier availability without the peak-season premium.
Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger, and enforcement is strict enough that it's not worth skipping. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas, 90 km/h on open roads, and up to 110-130 km/h on faster highways, with lower limits for smaller-engine bikes. The blood-alcohol limit sits at 0.5 g/l generally, but motorcyclists and novice drivers face a stricter 0.2 g/l, so it's best to leave the bike parked if you've been drinking. Keep your licence, IDP and rental papers with you on every ride — and remember that leaving the tarmac, even for a short beach shortcut, will usually void your insurance.
