Leros doesn't announce itself the way its bigger Dodecanese neighbours do, and that's exactly the point. Rent a motorcycle here and your first stop can be the hilltop Kastro tis Panagia, with the whole island and the sea beyond it spread out below, followed by a slow coast down into Panteli for lunch at a taverna table a few metres from the fishing boats. No bus route strings those two together in under an hour — a bike does it before you've worked up an appetite.
Leros is barely 20 km end to end, but its spine road climbs and winds between scattered bays, so distances that look short on a map take real time on foot or by the island's thin bus schedule. A scooter or light motorcycle turns that into an advantage: you can string together Agia Marina, Panteli and Alinda in a morning, then peel off toward quieter sand at Gourna or push further to Xerokambos, stopping wherever the light or the water looks good. Traffic is light and roads are narrow, so a two-wheeler suits the island's rhythm far better than a car ever would.
For a moped up to 50cc, category AM is enough and the minimum age is 16, though most rental shops set their own higher bar. Anything from 125cc up requires a matching motorcycle licence — A1, A2 or A — and you need to be 18. A car licence alone does not cover a scooter in Greece. Non-EU visitors should carry an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence, and expect to leave a deposit, usually held on a credit card, when you pick up the bike.
A basic scooter runs from EUR 20 to 25 per day in the quieter months, rising to EUR 30-40 in high season, with larger motorcycles at EUR 40-60. Premium or bigger-cc models in peak weeks can reach EUR 45-70 per day.
If your trip lands in July or August, book well ahead — scooters and motorcycles sell out island-wide and prices sit at their highest. May, June and September offer easier availability, milder riding weather and better rates, which makes them the sweet spot for exploring at a relaxed pace. Outside that window, from November to March, plan carefully since several rental shops shut down for the season entirely.
Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for rider and passenger alike, and police enforcement is strict, with real fines behind it. Speed limits top out at 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on open roads — though Leros's winding lanes rarely let you get near that. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, but a stricter 0.2 g/l applies to anyone on two wheels, so it's simplest to just leave the alcohol for after you've parked. Keep your licence, IDP, rental agreement and insurance papers with you whenever you ride, and stick to paved roads — insurance almost never covers dirt tracks or beach riding.
