Picture stepping off the ferry in Myrina and, within the hour, being the one deciding where the day goes — up to the Venetian walls of Myrina Castle for sunset, or along the coast road toward Thanos Beach with Mt Skopia rising behind the dunes. Lemnos rewards exactly this kind of freedom: it's an island of scattered villages, quiet coves and one whitewashed chapel balanced on a rock at Agios Ioannis, and a motorcycle is what lets you string them all together in a single afternoon instead of waiting on the island's sparse buses.
Distances here are generous by island standards but never punishing — most sights sit within 30 to 40 km of Myrina, an easy day trip by scooter or small motorcycle. Traffic is light, the tarmac is generally in good shape, and only the more remote corners, like the Petrified Forest or the Fakos Peninsula, drop onto unpaved tracks where a sturdier bike earns its keep. That mix of manageable distances and light traffic is exactly why so many visitors choose to rent a motorcycle in Myrina rather than rely on foot or public transport.
For scooters up to 50cc you'll need at least an AM licence category; anything 125cc and above requires the matching motorcycle licence — A1, A2 or A depending on the bike. Non-EU visitors should carry an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence. Minimum age is generally 16 for 50cc mopeds and 18 for larger motorcycles, though many rental shops set their own higher minimum and expect you to have held your licence for a while. Expect a deposit on top of the rental price, usually held on a credit card.
A basic 50–125cc scooter runs about 20–28 EUR per day in low season and 35–50 EUR per day in high season. Larger motorcycles from 250cc, and quad bikes, cost more — roughly 50–80 EUR per day.
If you're coming in July or August, book well ahead — high season sees the best bikes go first and prices climb accordingly. May, June, September and October give you calmer roads, cooler riding weather and noticeably better rates, with most shops still fully open. Outside that window, from November through March, availability shrinks as several operators shut down for the season, so it's worth confirming a shop is actually running before you count on a cheap winter rate.
Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for rider and passenger alike, and enforcement is strict enough that it's not worth testing. Speed limits top out at 50 km/h in town, 90 km/h on the open road and up to 130 km/h on motorways, though none of that applies much on Lemnos's village lanes. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, but a stricter 0.2 g/l applies to motorcyclists, so it's simplest to treat riding and drinking as separate activities entirely. Keep your licence, IDP, rental agreement and insurance papers on you, and remember that heading onto unpaved tracks — toward the Petrified Forest or Fakos, for instance — typically falls outside your insurance cover.
