There's a particular pleasure in rolling out of Ioannina's old town with the castle walls behind you and a whole day of empty mountain road ahead. This is Epirus — a corner of Greece most travellers skip on their way to the islands, which is exactly why it rewards two wheels so well. One morning you're circling Lake Pamvotida with the Ottoman fortress reflected in the water, the next you're leaning through hairpins toward the Vikos Gorge, one of the deepest canyons on earth. Few places pack this much contrast into a single tank of fuel.
Ioannina's compact old town and lakefront are easy enough on foot, but the real reason to rent a motorcycle in Ioannina lies beyond the city limits. The Zagorochoria villages, Katara Pass and the Tzoumerka mountains are stitched together by narrow, twisting roads with tight switchbacks and long gaps between settlements — the kind of terrain a car handles stiffly and a bike simply eats up, stopping wherever a view demands it.
You'll need a motorcycle licence matched to the bike's engine size — category A1, A2 or A — and rental companies are required to check that it matches. Minimum age is generally 18, though many operators set the bar higher for larger machines. A deposit is standard, usually held on a credit card, with the amount depending on the bike. If your licence isn't from an EU country, bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with it.
Expect to pay around EUR 25-30 per day in low season and EUR 35-45 per day in high season, with larger-cc or newer touring and adventure bikes running EUR 50-70 per day.
High season runs July to August, when demand and prices both peak and bikes can sell out ahead of time. Low season stretches from November to March, with the softest rates but a real chance that routes like Katara Pass or parts of Zagorochoria are less rideable. May, June, September and October tend to strike the best balance — good weather, open roads and calmer pricing, so booking a few weeks ahead is a sensible move.
Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger, and enforcement is strict. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas, 90 km/h on open roads, and up to 130 km/h on motorways, with lower limits for smaller-engine bikes. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, but motorcyclists and novice drivers face a stricter 0.2 g/l. Keep your licence, IDP, rental agreement and insurance papers with you whenever you ride, and remember that leaving paved roads — common temptation on some of the rougher mountain lanes here — typically voids your insurance cover.
