Glyfada moves at a different pace once you're on two wheels. Swap the taxi queue for a ride down the coast road, past Glyfada Beach (Asteras Glyfadas) in the morning and out to the geothermal waters of Lake Vouliagmeni by afternoon, with Athens itself only a short hop north whenever you want the Acropolis instead of the shore. A **motorcycle** turns this stretch of the Athenian Riviera into a single, flowing day rather than a string of separate outings.
This is exactly the kind of place a bike was made for. Poseidonos Avenue runs long, flat and straight along the water, linking Glyfada to Voula, Vouliagmeni and Varkiza with none of the hairpins or steep grades that make island roads tricky. Add in Glyfada's tight summer parking and marina-side traffic, and a motorcycle stops being a novelty and becomes simply the easiest way to get around — quick enough for beach-hopping, comfortable enough for the longer run to Cape Sounio.
Requirements depend on the engine size. Smaller scooters up to 50cc need at least an AM category licence, while anything from 125cc up requires the matching motorcycle category — A1, A2 or A. A standard car licence won't cover you here, and rental shops are required to check that your licence matches the bike. Minimum age is generally 16 for 50cc mopeds and 18 for the larger categories, though most rental companies set their own higher minimum and may ask for a minimum time you've held the licence. If your licence isn't from an EU country, bring an International Driving Permit. Expect to leave a deposit, usually a credit-card hold, with the amount varying by operator and vehicle.
A scooter or moped runs around EUR 20–25 per day in low season, climbing to EUR 35–55 per day for a scooter up to a mid-size motorcycle in high season. Larger displacement or premium motorcycles can reach EUR 60–100 or more per day at the peak of summer.
High season runs July through August, when prices peak and popular models sell out early — book a couple of weeks ahead if you're travelling then. Low season stretches from November to March, with softer prices but also fewer bikes on offer as some operators scale back. May, June, September and October hit a comfortable middle ground: good weather, better availability, and prices between the two extremes.
Greece drives on the right. Helmets are mandatory for both rider and passenger on any scooter, moped, motorcycle or quad, and this is enforced strictly with real fines attached. Speed limits are 50 km/h in town, 90 km/h on open roads, and up to 130 km/h on motorways, with lower limits for smaller-engine motorcycles. The general blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, but motorcyclists and new licence holders face a stricter 0.2 g/l. Keep your licence, IDP if required, rental agreement and insurance papers with you whenever you ride, and stick to paved roads — insurance typically excludes dirt tracks, beaches and any off-road riding entirely.
