Aegina feels made for two wheels. Ferries drop you in a harbor town of neoclassical facades and fish stalls, and from there a scooter turns the whole island into your afternoon — the pine-shaded Temple of Aphaia above Agia Marina, the seafood tables of Perdika, the quiet lanes past Vathi's pistachio groves. You're not waiting on the bus timetable or hunting for a taxi; you just go.

Aegina is only about 10 km across, but its roads reward exactly the kind of vehicle that can slip through them. Village lanes narrow fast, parking in Aegina Town and Perdika is tight, and outside the ferry rush hours traffic is light enough to relax into. A motorcycle or scooter gets you to the beaches, hill sites and inland villages the local bus barely touches, with none of the hassle of squeezing a car down a one-lane street.

Top 10 things to see in Aegina by motorcycle

  1. Temple of Aphaia — a well-preserved 5th-century BC Doric temple on a pine-covered hill near Agia Marina, one of the island's must-see ancient sites.
  2. Agia Marina — the island's main beach resort on the east coast, an easy scenic ride from Aegina Town, with swimming and tavernas.
  3. Perdika — a picturesque fishing village at the southern tip, known for waterfront seafood tavernas and boats to Moni islet.
  4. Palaiochora — a ruined Byzantine hill-town scattered with dozens of chapels, a quiet inland ride worth stopping for.
  5. Monastery of Agios Nektarios — Greece's largest church building and a major pilgrimage site, close enough to Palaiochora to combine in one loop.
  6. Moni Islet — park at Perdika and hop across by caique for swimming and free-roaming peacocks.
  7. Aegina Town waterfront and harbor — your likely starting point, with the neoclassical harbor, fish market and the lone column of the Temple of Apollo.
  8. Souvala — a low-key seaside village on the north coast, a good target for a coastal ride away from the busier east side.
  9. Marathonas — a sandy beach village just south of Aegina Town, an easy first afternoon on the bike.
  10. Vathi's pistachio groves — riding inland through Aegina's famous orchards makes a scenic, low-traffic change from the coastal runs.

What do you need to rent a motorcycle in Aegina?

For a 50cc moped, category AM covers you from age 16. Anything from 125cc up needs the matching motorcycle licence — A1, A2 or A — and a car licence won't substitute for it in Greece. Non-EU visitors should carry an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence. Rental shops will also take a deposit, usually as a credit-card hold, with the amount set by the individual operator.

How much does it cost to rent a motorcycle in Aegina?

A basic 50cc scooter runs 20-25 EUR per day in low season and 30-40 EUR in high season, while a 125cc-plus scooter or automatic motorcycle can reach 40-60 EUR per day at the peak.

  • Cheapest rates land in November-March, when many island shops close for the winter.
  • Prices climb steadily through spring and peak in July-August, alongside demand.

When to book a rental motorcycle in Aegina?

July and August are Aegina's high season — expect the highest prices and bikes selling out if you leave it too late. Low season runs November through March, when rates drop but many rental shops shut entirely. May-June and September-October strike a good balance: milder heat, thinner crowds, and prices between the two extremes, so it's worth booking a little ahead once you've picked your dates.

Local traffic rules in Aegina

Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger, and police enforce this strictly with real fines behind it. Speed limits top out at 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on open roads, with lower limits for smaller-engine bikes. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l for most drivers, but motorcyclists face a stricter 0.2 g/l. Keep your licence, IDP, rental agreement and insurance papers with you whenever you ride, and remember that leaving the tarmac — dirt tracks, beaches, unpaved roads — typically voids your insurance altogether.
