Picture yourself dropping down the coast road toward Porto Limnionas with the Ionian Sea flashing between the pines, or catching your first glimpse of the wrecked ship far below the cliffs at Navagio. Zakynthos rewards exactly this kind of freedom, and the easiest way to get it is to rent a motorcycle in Zakynthos and go find these places yourself, on your own schedule, without waiting on a tour bus.
The island is small enough to cross in a morning, roughly 40km from top to bottom, but its best corners sit at the end of narrow, winding lanes that buses rarely reach and that a rental car struggles to thread. A scooter slips through easily, and outside Zakynthos Town and the busy Laganas strip, traffic thins out fast, so even riders without much experience feel comfortable finding their way to the coves and viewpoints.
For a 50cc moped you need at least an AM category licence; anything from 125cc up requires the matching motorcycle category, A1, A2 or A — a car licence alone isn't accepted. The minimum age is 16 for AM mopeds and 18 for the motorcycle categories, though rental shops often set their own higher minimums. Non-EU visitors should bring an International Driving Permit, and expect a deposit, usually held on a credit card, with the amount set by the individual operator.
A 50-125cc scooter runs 15-25 EUR per day in low season and 25-40 EUR in high season, while bigger motorcycles or quads climb to 35-60+ EUR a day. Premium bikes from 250cc and up, or ATVs from top operators, can reach 50-80+ EUR daily.
High season runs July through August, when demand is highest, scooters sell out fastest, and prices sit at their peak — book well ahead if you're travelling then. Low season stretches from November to March, when many rental shops close for the winter altogether. May, June and September strike the best balance: fewer crowds, milder heat and gentler prices, so they're the sweet spot if your dates are flexible.
Greece drives on the right, and helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger, with fines for skipping one. Speed limits are 50 km/h in towns, 90 km/h on the open road and up to 110-130 km/h on faster roads, though smaller-engine bikes are capped lower. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, tightening to 0.2 g/l for motorcyclists, so it's best to skip alcohol entirely before riding. Keep your licence, IDP, rental agreement and insurance papers with you, and stick to paved roads — rental insurance almost never covers dirt tracks or beach riding.
