Picture swapping the island ferry timetable for your own throttle — that's what a motorcycle gives you on Skopelos. One morning you're parked above the harbor at Prophet Elias Monastery watching Chora's whitewashed houses catch the light, and by afternoon you're leaning into the pine-forest bends toward Milia Beach with nothing between you and the Aegean but open road. Renting a bike here turns the island from a place you visit into a place you actually ride through.
Skopelos rewards two wheels more than most Greek islands. The main road network runs under 30km end to end, so a scooter or small motorcycle comfortably covers Chora, the beaches and the mountain villages in a single day — something the limited local bus simply can't do. Roads here are narrow, winding and often steep, which makes cars feel clumsy and a bike feel like the obvious choice. If you want to rent a motorcycle in Skopelos, this is exactly the kind of island built for it.
For a 50cc moped, category AM is enough, with a minimum age of 16, though most rental shops set their own higher minimum. Anything from 125cc up needs the matching motorcycle licence — A1, A2 or A — and Greek shops are required to check that your licence covers the bike you're renting; a car licence won't substitute. If your licence isn't from the EU, bring an International Driving Permit. Expect a deposit, usually held on a credit card, with the amount set by the individual rental company.
Prices swing a fair amount across the year. A standard 50–125cc scooter runs around 20–25 EUR per day in low season, and 30–45 EUR per day in July and August. Larger or newer bikes, from 150cc to 300cc, and automatic scooters run 40–60 EUR per day at peak times.
If you're after the best prices and quieter roads, aim for the shoulder months — May, June, September or October. July and August bring the highest prices and the risk of scooters and bikes being fully booked, so reserve well ahead if that's your window. Many island rental shops close entirely from November through March, so winter travel isn't really an option here.
Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger, and police enforcement is strict, with substantial fines for skipping one. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on the open road — though island roads are narrow and full of blind bends, so the legal limit is rarely the sensible one. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l for most drivers, but it drops to a strict 0.2 g/l for motorcyclists, so it's effectively zero tolerance. Keep your licence, IDP, rental agreement and insurance papers with you at all times, and stay on paved roads — insurance almost never covers dirt tracks, gravel or beach riding.
