Picture this: pine woods thinning out to reveal a curve of white pebble beach, the engine humming low as the road climbs toward an abandoned medieval fortress on a headland. That's an ordinary afternoon when you rent a motorcycle in Skiathos Town. This is an island built for two wheels — you can be swimming at Koukounaries Beach by mid-morning and watching the sun drop behind the ruins of Kastro by evening, all on one tank of fuel.
Skiathos covers barely 48 km², strung together by one paved spine road that loops from the town out to the beaches and up into the hills. Traffic stays light outside the busiest August weeks, and most sights sit just 10 to 25 minutes apart, so a rental car feels like overkill on roads this narrow. A scooter or small motorcycle slips into beach parking a car never could, and that's exactly why motorcycle rental in Skiathos is how most visitors actually get around.
For a 50cc moped, you need at least an AM category licence and must be 16 or older. Anything from 125cc up requires the matching motorcycle category — A1, A2 or A — and a standard car licence won't cover you. Non-EU visitors should bring an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence. Rental shops will also hold a deposit, usually as a credit-card authorisation, before handing over the keys.
Our listing price starts at 25 EUR per day for a basic scooter or 50cc in shoulder season. Expect prices to shift with demand:
High season runs July through August, when scooters sell out fast and prices climb; book several weeks ahead if you're travelling then. Low season stretches from November to March, when many island rental shops close altogether. The sweet spot is May, June, September or October — comfortable riding weather, thinner crowds, and prices anchored near that 25 EUR/day low.
Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for riders and passengers, and police enforcement is strict, so skipping one isn't worth the fine. Speed limits top out at 50 km/h in town and 90 km/h on the open road, though island roads rarely let you go that fast anyway. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, but a stricter 0.2 g/l applies to motorcyclists, so it's best to leave the bike parked if you've been drinking. Keep your licence, IDP and rental papers with you, and remember that insurance almost always excludes unpaved tracks and beaches — stick to the tarmac.
