Pyrgos rarely makes it onto a first-timer's Greek itinerary, but that's exactly what makes it worth a closer look — and there's no better way to close that distance than on two wheels. Pick up a motorcycle here and you're minutes from Ancient Olympia, close enough to the sea to smell it, and near enough to Katakolo's harbor tavernas for a lazy lunch. You'll be riding past olive groves and small farms one moment, parking steps from a 2,800-year-old stadium the next.
What makes Pyrgos so well suited to a bike is simple geography: the sights are scattered across small towns, beaches and archaeological grounds a bit too far to walk between, but each only 15 to 40 minutes apart by scooter or motorcycle. Roads outside the town center are quiet, mostly flat or gently rolling, and parking at Katakolo, Olympia or any beach along the coast is far easier when you're not hunting for a spot big enough for a car. A motorcycle rental in Pyrgos effectively turns the whole Ilia coast into your day-trip radius.
Requirements depend on engine size. For a moped up to 50 cc, a category AM licence and a minimum age of 16 is enough. Anything from 125 cc upward needs the matching motorcycle category — A1, A2 or A — and a minimum age of 18; a car licence isn't accepted as a substitute in Greece. Non-EU visitors should bring an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence. Rental shops will also ask for a deposit, usually held on a credit card, with the amount set by each operator.
Expect around 20-25 EUR per day in low season, rising to 30-40 EUR in high season, with larger, premium models running 40-55 EUR per day.
If you're travelling in July or August, book ahead — this is when demand peaks, prices climb and popular models sell out fastest. Shoulder months like May, June, September and October offer a good balance of mild weather, thinner crowds and more reasonable rates, with less need to reserve far in advance. Come in the November-to-March low season and you'll find the cheapest prices, though some rental shops in the area close for the winter, so it's worth checking availability before you plan around it.
Greece drives on the right, and helmets are mandatory for both rider and passenger on any scooter, moped or motorcycle — enforcement is strict and fines aren't small. Speed limits run 50 km/h in built-up areas, 90 km/h on open roads and up to 110-130 km/h on faster stretches, though smaller-engine bikes are capped lower. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, but only 0.2 g/l for motorcyclists, so it's best treated as effectively zero. Keep your licence, IDP, rental agreement and insurance papers on you whenever you ride, and stick to paved roads — insurance typically excludes beaches, dirt tracks and unpaved routes entirely.
