Piraeus rewards anyone willing to skip the taxi queue at the ferry terminal and just ride off on two wheels. Head up to Kastella hill for a sweeping view over the Saronic Gulf, then drop back down to Mikrolimano marina as the sun sets and the seafood tavernas start filling their terraces. It's the kind of afternoon that only really works on a bike.
This is a port city built for scooters, not cars. Streets near the ferry terminals are narrow and clog fast with taxis and buses, and parking a car anywhere close to the water can eat half an hour of your day. A scooter slips through the traffic and parks wherever you land. It also opens up the coast: central Athens is a short ride north, and the whole Athens Riviera — Glyfada, Voula, Vouliagmeni — runs southeast along a single scenic road, so a base in Piraeus puts a lot of Attica within easy reach.
For anything up to 50cc you'll need at least an AM category licence; anything 125cc and above requires the matching motorcycle category (A1, A2 or A) — a car licence isn't accepted as a substitute in Greece. Minimum age is generally 16 for 50cc mopeds and 18 for the larger categories, though rental companies often set their own higher minimum and may ask for a minimum licence-holding period. Non-EU visitors should carry an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence. Expect to leave a deposit, usually a credit-card hold, with the exact amount set by the individual operator.
Our listing price starts around 25 EUR per day in low season for a basic scooter, with the wider market typically running 20-30 EUR. In high season, prices for a basic-to-mid scooter climb to roughly 35-55 EUR per day, and larger or premium motorcycles can reach 50-90 EUR or more.
High season runs July-August, when prices peak and popular models sell out early, so it pays to book in advance if you're travelling then. Low season stretches November-March, with softer prices but also quieter weather for riding. May-June and September-October sit in between: mild temperatures, thinner crowds and generally the most comfortable months to actually be out on a bike.
Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger on scooters and motorcycles, and enforcement is strict. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas, 90 km/h on open roads, 110 km/h on dual carriageways and 130 km/h on motorways, with lower limits for smaller-engine bikes. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l for most drivers, but a stricter 0.2 g/l applies to motorcyclists. Rental insurance almost never covers unpaved roads or off-road use, so keep to the tarmac, and always carry your licence, IDP and rental papers while riding.
