Paxos rewards patience with a motorcycle more than almost any other Ionian island. Leave the car ferry queue behind, roll off the boat in Gaios, and within minutes you're threading olive groves on lanes barely wide enough for two scooters to pass. Twenty minutes later you're parked above Lakka's horseshoe bay with a coffee in hand, wondering why anyone bothers with a car here at all.
The whole island runs about 10km end to end, which is exactly why a scooter or small motorcycle suits it so well. Village lanes narrow to a single track, corners tighten around stone walls, and cars often have to reverse to let each other pass — a bike simply glides through. You can cross from the harbor at Gaios to the cliffs at Erimitis and back in an afternoon, parking wherever you like instead of hunting for space in a cramped village square.
For mopeds up to 50cc you need at least an AM category licence; for anything 125cc and above, a matching motorcycle category (A1, A2 or A) is required — a car licence alone won't do in Greece. The minimum age is generally 16 for AM and 18 for the larger categories, though many rental shops set their own, higher minimum. Non-EU visitors should carry an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence. Expect a deposit, usually held on a credit card, with the exact amount set by the rental company.
A basic scooter runs around 20-25 EUR per day in low season, climbing to 35-50 EUR per day in high season. Larger or brand-new models, 250cc and up, can reach 50-70 EUR per day at the peak of summer.
High season runs July through August, when scooters and motorcycles sell out early and prices sit at their highest. Low season stretches from November to March, though many island rental shops close entirely over these months. The sweet spot is May-June or September, when the weather is still warm, prices are gentler, and the roads are far quieter.
Greece drives on the right, and helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger — enforcement is strict, with substantial fines for going without one. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on open roads, though Paxos's narrow lanes rarely allow anything close to that. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, but a stricter 0.2 g/l applies to motorcyclists. Keep in mind that insurance almost always excludes unpaved tracks and beaches, so stick to the tarmac to stay covered.
