Paxos rewards patience with a motorcycle more than almost any other Ionian island. Leave the car ferry queue behind, roll off the boat in Gaios, and within minutes you're threading olive groves on lanes barely wide enough for two scooters to pass. Twenty minutes later you're parked above Lakka's horseshoe bay with a coffee in hand, wondering why anyone bothers with a car here at all.

The whole island runs about 10km end to end, which is exactly why a scooter or small motorcycle suits it so well. Village lanes narrow to a single track, corners tighten around stone walls, and cars often have to reverse to let each other pass — a bike simply glides through. You can cross from the harbor at Gaios to the cliffs at Erimitis and back in an afternoon, parking wherever you like instead of hunting for space in a cramped village square.

Top 10 things to see in Paxos by motorcycle

  1. Gaios — the island's picturesque capital harbor, lined with Venetian-era buildings and tavernas, a natural hub to start any ride.
  2. Panagia Island (Nisi) — a tiny islet facing Gaios harbor with a monastery, an iconic photo stop reachable by a short boat hop from the port.
  3. Lakka — a scenic fishing village on a horseshoe bay at the island's north tip, popular for its cafes and swimming spots.
  4. Loggos — a quiet, colorful harbor village midway up the east coast, a favorite lunch stop on the coastal route.
  5. Erimitis cliffs and viewpoint — dramatic white limestone cliffs on the west coast with sunset views over the Ionian Sea.
  6. Voutoumi Beach (Antipaxos) — a turquoise-water beach often called one of Greece's best, reached via a short boat transfer from Paxos.
  7. Vrika Beach (Antipaxos) — another postcard beach on Antipaxos, usually paired with Voutoumi on a boat-and-ride day trip.
  8. Blue Caves of Paxos — sea caves along the west coast best seen on a boat excursion from Lakka or Gaios.
  9. Ozias Monastery — a hilltop monastery inland with panoramic views over olive groves toward the sea, reached along quiet backroads.
  10. Windmill of Paxos — a restored stone windmill near Gaios overlooking the strait toward Antipaxos.

What do you need to rent a motorcycle in Paxos?

For mopeds up to 50cc you need at least an AM category licence; for anything 125cc and above, a matching motorcycle category (A1, A2 or A) is required — a car licence alone won't do in Greece. The minimum age is generally 16 for AM and 18 for the larger categories, though many rental shops set their own, higher minimum. Non-EU visitors should carry an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence. Expect a deposit, usually held on a credit card, with the exact amount set by the rental company.

How much does it cost to rent a motorcycle in Paxos?

A basic scooter runs around 20-25 EUR per day in low season, climbing to 35-50 EUR per day in high season. Larger or brand-new models, 250cc and up, can reach 50-70 EUR per day at the peak of summer.

  • Cheapest: April, May and October
  • Priciest: July and August, when demand across the island peaks

When to book a rental motorcycle in Paxos?

High season runs July through August, when scooters and motorcycles sell out early and prices sit at their highest. Low season stretches from November to March, though many island rental shops close entirely over these months. The sweet spot is May-June or September, when the weather is still warm, prices are gentler, and the roads are far quieter.

Local traffic rules in Paxos

Greece drives on the right, and helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger — enforcement is strict, with substantial fines for going without one. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on open roads, though Paxos's narrow lanes rarely allow anything close to that. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, but a stricter 0.2 g/l applies to motorcyclists. Keep in mind that insurance almost always excludes unpaved tracks and beaches, so stick to the tarmac to stay covered.
