Patras rewards anyone willing to leave the ferry terminal on two wheels rather than on foot. Climb the steep switchbacks up to Patras Castle for a view over the gulf, then drop back down to the seafront and follow the coast road out to the Rio–Antirrio Bridge, one of the longest cable-stayed bridges in the world. You could take a bus partway, but you would miss the wind, the views, and the freedom to stop wherever the road looks interesting.
Patras is a compact port city, but its old town is a tangle of steep, narrow streets where parking a car near the castle or the waterfront is a genuine headache. A scooter slips through where a car can't, and gets you a space right where you need one. The city is also the natural starting point for longer rides — along the coast to the bridge, up into the Panachaiko hills, or east toward the Vouraikos Gorge — distances that are awkward by bus but easy and enjoyable on a bike. If you're planning to rent a motorcycle in Patras, this is a city built for exactly that kind of exploring.
The licence you need depends on the engine size. Scooters up to 50cc require at least an AM category, while anything from 125cc up needs the matching motorcycle licence — A1, A2 or A. A standard car licence won't cover you here. The minimum age is 16 for AM mopeds and 18 for the motorcycle categories, though many rental companies set their own, slightly higher minimum. If you're travelling from outside the EU, bring an International Driving Permit. Expect to leave a deposit, usually as a credit-card hold, with the exact amount set by the rental company.
Prices in Patras follow the same rhythm as the rest of the Peloponnese: expect EUR 20–25 per day in low season and EUR 35–50 per day in high season, with premium models running EUR 50–70 or more.
High season runs July to August, when demand and prices both peak and popular models can sell out. Low season stretches from November to March, with the best combination of mild weather and low prices generally falling in the shoulder months of May–June and September–October. If you're travelling in summer, book your motorcycle rental in Patras a few weeks ahead to make sure the model you want is still available.
Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger, and the rule is strictly enforced. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas, 90 km/h on open roads, and up to 130 km/h on motorways, though smaller-engine bikes often have lower limits. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l for most drivers, but motorcyclists and riders in their first two years of licence face a stricter 0.2 g/l. Carry your licence, IDP and rental papers with you whenever you ride, and keep to paved roads — insurance almost never covers unpaved tracks or beaches.
