Few Greek islands reward a motorcycle the way Nisyros does. This is a live volcano you can actually ride into — the road climbs out of the harbor at Mandraki, switches back through pine and fig terraces, and drops you at the rim of the Stefanos Crater, where you park, walk down onto the sulfur-crusted floor, and hear the ground hiss under your boots. From there the road keeps climbing to Nikia, a whitewashed clifftop village stacked around the caldera, and the light on the water below changes by the hour.
The island is tiny, but the terrain isn't easy: steep gradients, tight hairpins and narrow lanes link Mandraki to the caldera villages in just a few kilometres. A car feels bulky on these roads and can't stop where you want it to. A scooter or small motorcycle can pull over at every viewpoint along the rim, thread the switchbacks without drama, and get you back down before the afternoon heat sets in — and outside Mandraki, traffic is close to nonexistent, so there's nothing rushing you.
For scooters up to 50cc, category AM is enough and the minimum age is 16, though most rental shops set their own minimum higher. Anything from 125cc up requires a matching motorcycle licence — A1, A2 or A — and you must be 18. A standard car licence does not cover you on a scooter or motorcycle in Greece. If you're travelling from outside the EU, bring your International Driving Permit along with your licence. Expect a deposit, usually held on a credit card, with the amount set by the individual rental company.
A standard 50–125cc scooter runs around EUR 20–25 per day in low season, and larger or newer models can reach EUR 50–70 per day where available.
July and August are Nisyros at its busiest and priciest, with scooters selling out well ahead of time — book several weeks in advance if you're travelling then. April, May and October bring quieter roads, cooler riding weather and the lowest prices, and you can usually book with much shorter notice. Many island rental shops close for the winter, so outside the April–October window, availability drops sharply.
Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger, and police enforcement is strict, with fines that add up fast. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on the open road, though Nisyros's hairpins rarely let you get near that. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, but a stricter 0.2 g/l applies to motorcyclists, so it's simplest to ride sober. Keep to paved roads: insurance excludes dirt tracks and off-road riding almost everywhere on the islands.
