Few Greek islands reward a motorcycle the way Nisyros does. This is a live volcano you can actually ride into — the road climbs out of the harbor at Mandraki, switches back through pine and fig terraces, and drops you at the rim of the Stefanos Crater, where you park, walk down onto the sulfur-crusted floor, and hear the ground hiss under your boots. From there the road keeps climbing to Nikia, a whitewashed clifftop village stacked around the caldera, and the light on the water below changes by the hour.

The island is tiny, but the terrain isn't easy: steep gradients, tight hairpins and narrow lanes link Mandraki to the caldera villages in just a few kilometres. A car feels bulky on these roads and can't stop where you want it to. A scooter or small motorcycle can pull over at every viewpoint along the rim, thread the switchbacks without drama, and get you back down before the afternoon heat sets in — and outside Mandraki, traffic is close to nonexistent, so there's nothing rushing you.

Top 10 things to see in Nisyros by motorcycle

  1. Stefanos Crater (Polyvotis volcano) — the island's main draw: ride up to the caldera rim and walk into the active crater floor.
  2. Nikia — a clifftop village of whitewashed lanes with the best panoramic view down into the volcanic caldera.
  3. Porta — Nikia's circular pebble-mosaic square right at the caldera edge, a natural stop for the view and a coffee.
  4. Emborios — a half-abandoned hilltop village facing Nikia across the caldera, with atmospheric narrow streets and more crater views.
  5. Mandraki — the island's port and capital, with Venetian-era lanes, tavernas and the harbor where most rentals begin.
  6. Paleokastro — a Cyclopean-walled ancient acropolis on the hill above Mandraki, an easy ride-and-climb with sea views.
  7. Monastery of Panagia Spiliani — a cave monastery built into the rock above Mandraki's harbor, worth the short detour for the vantage point alone.
  8. Loutra — the old spa building on the bay by Mandraki, tied to the island's thermal and volcanic-spring tradition.
  9. Pali — a small coastal village and beach on the road out of Mandraki, relaxed and lined with tavernas by the water.
  10. Lies Beach — a quiet volcanic-sand beach at the end of a short scenic ride, far less crowded than the port-side coast.

What do you need to rent a motorcycle in Nisyros?

For scooters up to 50cc, category AM is enough and the minimum age is 16, though most rental shops set their own minimum higher. Anything from 125cc up requires a matching motorcycle licence — A1, A2 or A — and you must be 18. A standard car licence does not cover you on a scooter or motorcycle in Greece. If you're travelling from outside the EU, bring your International Driving Permit along with your licence. Expect a deposit, usually held on a credit card, with the amount set by the individual rental company.

How much does it cost to rent a motorcycle in Nisyros?

A standard 50–125cc scooter runs around EUR 20–25 per day in low season, and larger or newer models can reach EUR 50–70 per day where available.

  • Cheapest: April, May and October, close to our EUR 25/day anchor rate.
  • Priciest: July and August, when demand pushes daily rates to roughly EUR 35–45.

When to book a rental motorcycle in Nisyros?

July and August are Nisyros at its busiest and priciest, with scooters selling out well ahead of time — book several weeks in advance if you're travelling then. April, May and October bring quieter roads, cooler riding weather and the lowest prices, and you can usually book with much shorter notice. Many island rental shops close for the winter, so outside the April–October window, availability drops sharply.

Local traffic rules in Nisyros

Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger, and police enforcement is strict, with fines that add up fast. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on the open road, though Nisyros's hairpins rarely let you get near that. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, but a stricter 0.2 g/l applies to motorcyclists, so it's simplest to ride sober. Keep to paved roads: insurance excludes dirt tracks and off-road riding almost everywhere on the islands.
